To leave over a promotion?

cherib · 18/11/2025 11:06

I work in a very small team, myself colleague and manager.

Me and colleague had the exact same job role/title and then she got a promotion. Not an advertised one, the manager just promoted her.

It hurt because it changed the entire structure of the team and the manager never at any point had a conversation with me about it.

Now colleague is saying our manager has discussed giving her yet another promotion. I feel like I’m just there to do the small churn of tasks that need doing that supports colleague by allowing her to do big projects that get noticed.

Aibu to leave? My manager clearly sees no potential in me.

Yes - but take it slowly. Find absolutely the right job first. And do t bust a gut for them in the meantime

Yes, look after your own career. What have you gained from this position and where are you going next? What are your ambitions?

Have you tried talking to your manager?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/11/2025 11:10

I think there is some merit in speaking to your manager about this.

At the same time, start looking around for other jobs. But as others say, do it properly, don’t flounce out with nothing to go to.

I'd ask for a conversation, I spoke about growing the members of a report's team and at the end she said what about me and I'd just looked past her, she was promoted not long after. If the conversation confirms what you think then start to look around.

I would and did from a job where, after 5 years all the others in my small team of 5 had been promoted and I wasn't. Three of them were 'automatic' promotions where the salaries were rebanded which meant that they were all (male) earning more than me (only female), for the same job. Sometimes your face doesn't fit or there is an agenda going on and the best response imo is to vote with your feet (floodgates opened where I was and they are now permanently recruiting for replacements across wider team). I'm now doing a less intense job (same role) for 20% more salary.

I've found that once you've been deemed 'not promotion' material within an organisation you're unlikely to change that mindset. As pp have said best to update your cv and start looking whilst quiet quitting. No flouncing, no whining. Just go and get a better job.

I did speak to the manager, she said it’s a promotion in title and the role is still the same - sure she’ll be getting paid more now though. But now there clearly yet another promotion coming her way.
