Possible DVT. What should I do at A&E

In A&E with my daughter who has a pain in her leg after sitting immobile in one position for many hours over the weekend. No redness or swelling. I saw a thread on here over the weekend where people were saying that DVT can’t be ruled out just by looking at it, and that swelling and redness are not always present. If the doctor looks at it and says “go home” should I just accept this? I’m normally quite shy and don’t like making a fuss but know I need to advocate for my daughter. Any advice?

They should do a D dimer test I think it's called. Insist if you have to.

Thank you @gamerchick! I’ll Google that now

Medical staff use something called a Wells score to decide on the risk of DVT, they may want to take bloods to check her D-Dimer levels and possibly scan it to fully rule out a clot.

It's not necessarily unreasonable to rule out a DVT on examination alone

Cherrysoup · 17/11/2025 21:40

Scan is the only solution, really. I’d want to insist. I had the classic signs, red, swelling, pain, had 2 now. At one point, my leg swelled to elephantine proportions. Took myself to the Gp for an emergency appointment and was sent to urgent care then given a scan booking and they took bloods, made me wait round for several hours to confirm a dvt.

Why was your dd sat like that for so long?

Yes. They can do a D-Dimer and I've also had them measure my calves to see if one is bigger than the other! They'll probably manipulate the area a little and see if it feels hot. I've had a few DVT scares and once needed Heparin injections. Hope your DD is OK.

Oh - and take some blood.

Just to say, I was on Rivoraxaban (sp?) both times. If she has a clot (I think it’s unusual for youngsters, is she young?) she needs to avoid vigorous physical activity.

BadgernTheGarden · 17/11/2025 21:43

If she has pain in her leg you need to find out why they shouldn't just tell you to go home you're not there to just find out if it's DVT you want to know what the problem is not what it isn't.

Sitting in one position for many hours would make your leg hurt. There may not be another reason…

Thanks for the advice everyone. Got a blood test done and just waiting for the results. Probably all fine but best to get it checked
