To ask how long it takes for a stomach bug to go through the family?

How long does it take for a stomach bug to pass from one person to another? I always thought it was 48 hours but not so sure now.
DD1 had D&V on Wednesday (literally 24 hour thing). DD2 started being sick Saturday morning (it was less than 24 hours)
I'm absolutely paranoid that me, DH and DS are going to come down with it, even though we've gone past 48 hours, just.
I am 99% certain DD1 caught her bug from work and I suppose DD2 could have caught it from college but what's the longest you've had a bug go through your family? Do you think we're safe now or is it normal to get a bug 72 hours after someone is clear?

I don't know the answer but I had a horrendous bug 2 weeks ago and somehow DH and 2 young children didn't get it, despite me being in no way able to isolate from them. Like you I kept waiting for it to hit next person but it was just me. At Christmas we all 4 of us got one and all 4 of us had symptoms within about 48 hours of the first one.

I’d say if the house has been vomit free since Saturday night or thereabouts you’re probably looking at being largely out of the woods by the end of Wednesday if nobody starts up before then. They’re most contagious up to 48 hours after symptoms stop (but can still be contagious for a couple of weeks) and you’ve also got the time for incubating to factor in.

Good luck!

I think it really depends. My daughter (primary school age) had sickness and diarrhea, which my husband then got. However both myself and her brother completely avoided it (and I was the one dealing with her as well so if anyone should have got it you would have thought it would have been me!).

It's about 24-72h incubation but you could all catch it at different times. So you could all be sick one after the other, or only some of you could get it.

Weirdly our last stomach bug had a 24hr break between each person.

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 17/11/2025 21:21

So still a chance we could get it then. How depressing. I hate dealing with sick and being sick myself so I really hoped we were going to be lucky. Just keeping everything crossed that we are all fine this week.

It depends what you touch or inhale.
So you can inhale the virus just by being in th area where the bodily fluid came out.
So bathroom etc.
Then the person who is ill can transfer tiny droplets by touch...onto doorhandles..surfaces anything they touch.
This can live ..dependng on the virus..for up to 3 weeks on the surface.
The only thing to kill these stomach virus is bleach or chlorine .
Hope you manage to avoid it
