To think I can buy a decent air mattress with pump that won't deflate

2 adult ds living at home paying rent, no spare room and friend coming to stay. She has back issues and I was looking at the air mattresses that are bed height. Great overall reviews but still significant numbers saying they deflate.
Anyone got any recommendations or experience of the best options please.
Thank you

I don't know if the quality has declined recently, but a few years ago I used an Aerobed brand bed as my main bed for several months and it was extremely comfy and had no problems with deflating. Very quick and easy to inflate and deflated too.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 17/11/2025 19:10

I have one of these! It self inflates, it’s bloody brilliant. All our guests have never moaned once with it compared to traditional air beds.

Thank you. Sadly I can't find that brand new anywhere.. Only on eBay.

I think it is luck of the draw. I went for an inflatable sofa for a few months because of various reasons couldn't get a proper one.

It did deflate, but very slowly. After a few months it sprang a proper leak and died.

Most of them are probably OK for one night. If they come with a leak that bad that they can't stand one night I'd be returning them.

Edit : I would buy it and stick a persons worth of heavy stuff on it, then return it if it deflates.

The bed height ones are shite. Get a low profile one from Decathlon (price depends on whether double or single but I think the double is about £120). They are self-inflating (needs a bit of extra help with a pump or your mouth for max inflation) and pack down very small. They are very comfy. I sleep better in a tent on one of those than anywhere else!

Thatstheheatingon · 17/11/2025 20:37

I find they give up the ghost at some point. But are so comfy. I bought a new one and am being very careful about how I keep it, in case that contributes to it deflating. They don't tend to spring a leak, it's more a slow puncture type thing

We have the intex inflatable mattresses - they are electric and inflate very fast and don’t deflate. Well worth it

Thatstheheatingon · 17/11/2025 20:39

I think the friend should sleep in your dd's bed, then you can get whatever type of temp bed you can afford

Which brand do you recommend please? There are so many. Thanks.

Ive got three of the intex ones. I had a friend stay for a week and she only had to top it up once.

Peridoteage · 17/11/2025 20:45

Get a proper camping brand one eg colman or something, it will be more robust.

Unfortunately the Coleman branded ones have worse reviews than the ones I was looking at. No matter which I look at they all seem have have some reviews where people have found they deflate or leak 😞

I have the yawn ones, the trick is don’t over fill it, as once a persons weight is on them it can cause a leak. You need to leave basically enough space so when someone lies on it it’s firm, not firm when it’s blown up with no one on it.

i have two yawn ones, they are great, I use the double when a single person stays and the king when a couple stay, everyone thinks they are excellent.

dottyaboutstripes · 17/11/2025 20:55

We have a Sealy one which is great.

Tomikka · 17/11/2025 21:06

There are two parts to ‘deflating’, especially with small pumps, that when you initially inflate the bed the pump motor heats up and you have a level of warm air.
After you have pumped it up the air will cool and appear to deflate. The bigger the mattress is the more noticeable that will be

So pump it up, turn off for a while then top up later

Depending on the mattress and it’s type
of valve, it should ideally have a non return valve so you don’t lose too much air when removing the pump

For camping I have one that I fill with a battery pump, cool it and top up with the battery pump and then it also has a foot pump in the corner to finish off any sagginess (not forgetting to twist the relevant valve on and off to use the foot pump

I had the Vango blissful double airbed from Amazon, it was very comfortable and easy to inflate/deflate. It was a good height for me and my dodgy back, it worked great for a couple of years until my daft sil dived on to it and it developed a slow leak which we mended and a got a few more uses out of it.

antwacky · 17/11/2025 21:19

I meant to add we now have the iDOO double airbed from Amazon and that's working out well too.

Decathlon own brand

I have one from Huddle which has a built in secondary quiet pump that kicks in if the bed starts to deflate. It’s my main bed and I have been using it everyday for the last 3 months.

It’s lovely and comfortable and stays inflated all night. I deflate it every morning and pack it away by day.

We have a single one of these. It’s been used a couple of times with no issues
