To ask if anyone has had any success at filing a “chargeback” on their debit card?

I recently paid for a service that I won’t be receiving because the company has gone bankrupt.

I know this is why I should have paid on my credit card, but I didn’t. That’s where I’m at now. I have filed a “chargeback” (I don’t know what the actual term is in the UK), with all proof - emails showing the payment receipt, the notification of bankruptcy and a message from the company’s partner company stating that I need to secure a chargeback, as they won’t be refunding.

Has anyone had to do this and achieved a good result? I’ve already had it denied once because their AI didn’t recognise that I had only filled in one page of the twenty available for transactions. I called them and they said this happens all the time, so to email it in to an inbox that will be reviewed by a human.

Any good stories?!

I did one on my banking app for my debit card. Click on the transaction and follow the links. No harm in trying!

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/11/2025 18:46

I did, it took a few weeks, though the company didn't go bankrupt.

I’ve received money back for an item that wasn’t delivered. Through the banking app it was easy but I needed to provide evidence that I had tried and failed to contact the company.

My son did for something he ordered that didn’t arrive. His bank is monzo and he said they were really helpful.

HoneyPie12 · 17/11/2025 18:48

I have. It was relatively easy although it took a while. They sided with me and gave me my money back. The company hadn't sent the goods.

Judellie · 17/11/2025 18:48

I have done it when a company I was buying a bed from went bust, yes.

BaronessofBirmingham · 17/11/2025 18:50

Thanks everyone. Almost everything I’m seeing online is American, where they seem to have very few protections.

I submitted a credit card claim when a cycling travel company when bust and my credit card company successfully requested a chargeback from the company's bank rather than a section 75 claim.

I’m talking about debit card protection, not credit.

I think chargeback is a credit card term but on a debit card, it’s just a dispute. But either way the process is fairly similar, words are probably interchangeable depending on the bank.

And yeah, I have raised a few disputes over the years and had them decided in my favour. Usually when things get to chargeback stage, you have made an attempt to resolve things yourself, so it’s just a case of sending across correspondence etc

TheWickerWoman · 17/11/2025 18:54

I have done it twice with Halifax.

one for an item that wasn’t delivered. They refunded the money then opened a dispute with the seller who argued back. They had a set amount of time to give their defence which they didn’t.

second was a bed from a bed store that went bust. I had only paid the first instalment which I had refunded also.

I did upload screenshots of evidence and they do warn you that if anything else comes back from the seller that goes in their favour they will take the refund back. Both times I was successfully refunded with no issue.

Yes I submitted as a credit card claim but card company pursued it as if it was a debit card and it was successful.

I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing. 26 years on this planet and I’ve never had it happen to me before 😂 I reached out to the partner company who confirmed they wouldn’t be doing refunds, so I’ve sent everything across to the bank.

Yes, I did. I booked a flying lesson for DH from a local flying school which closed down before we had the lesson (without telling us!). When I found out assumed I’d have to write off the cost because I had paid on my debit card but I called my bank to check and they talked me through the chargeback process which was successful.

My bank (Allied Irish Bank) has always been helpful. I've ever had a problem with a chargeback. I'm sure most banks are the same.

Whywhwhy · 18/11/2025 06:56

Yes I got money back through my nationwide debit card after the company shut down for some flooring I bought.
I had to Send them details and evidence such as invoice etc and they refunded fairly quickly but said if they had any issues with the claim before it was closed they would take the money back.

IamnotSethRogan · 18/11/2025 07:03

I did recently have some success but I used PayPal. Bought something, it didn't arrive so a couple .months later a quick search showed the company was in administration. The PayPal process was incredibly simple, they didn't ask for proof of anything from me and I had the money back in 2 days. Hopefully yours will come back soon!

Felixinthefactory · 18/11/2025 07:13

I got money back from my HSBC debit card after stupidly buying from a Facebook add. Item never artived.

Same, although in Ireland we don’t have section 75 so it’s a chargeback whether it’s a debit or credit card.

Vickim03 · 18/11/2025 07:31

I did for a takeaway that never arrived after no success with the shop. They disputed so although I was initially refunded, the money was then taken again. The bank did warn me that could happen. I now don’t use that takeaway shop!

I've had a couple of successful chargebacks however I think there are rules on bankruptcy and you may not qualify. What sort of payment is it? Is it physical goods you won't now receive? Have you received any part of whatever you paid for? If the chargeback isn't successful you could register as a creditor. You should get a decision from the Bank quickly. I'd pick up the phone and speak to someone in the disputes department rather than fill in an online form
