Yoto when DS6 has asked for a Toniebox

BraOffPjsOn · 16/11/2025 16:35

So DS6 has asked for a toniebox for Xmas (I think he likes the figures and has seen friends ones) but I think the yoto is probably better for his age and as he gets older?
He’s quite a young 6.

would I be unreasonable to get him a yoto when he’s asked for a Toniebox?

Any advice on the differences as it’s hard to find much online (especially of them actually being used) and we don’t know anyone with Yoto.

I’m about to buy a Yoto each for DS6 and DS9 for Xmas and I agree they look better for older ages as they have the chapter books and the soundtracks like K Pop Demon Hunters. We never had a Tonie, those little figures put me off as I think they would get lost in the soup of plastic dinosaurs and happy meal toys in our house. Besides I think the mini yotos are better for the car, train journeys etc

Hercisback1 · 16/11/2025 16:45

Yoto every day of the week. Tell a white lie if you need to, santa was out of tonie boxes.

Yoto grows up with them. My two have had one 3 years and it's used daily.

disasterStrikes · 16/11/2025 16:55

i bought the toniebox for my dd when she was turning 8; she really liked it after seeing it at a cousins house (much younger cousin).
I didn’t know about other audio players for kids at the time. She used it for a while, but it was evident the toniebox was aimed at younger children. They did and are still bringing out pocket tonies that are aimed at older children, but we decided to sell it on. I was going to replace with the yoto however ended up getting Voxblock. Really happy with the choice, especially since there’s a huge library of classical books.

YorkshireIndie · 16/11/2025 17:03

You can get chapter books for the tonie box. My just turned 6 still very much loves his box. We have a lot of fact books and the national geographic tonies

Tootiredforthis23 · 16/11/2025 17:08

We’ve had a tonies box since DD was 3, she’s 7 now and does still use it, we have Toy Story and horrible histories tonies she uses a lot, but mostly she’s uses it when she’s playing with her younger siblings. For a 6 year old I would skip straight to the yoto. The tonies are good for younger children as they’re impossible to break but they aren’t as easy to store as the yoto cards are.

SomeMoreSummer · 16/11/2025 17:12

We have both here and I would absolutely skip the tonies and go yoto even for a younger child. I do find the figurines a faff and yoto is just easier to use and more portable. Better range of stories and the daily radio show on yoto is very sweet.

neverbeenskiing · 16/11/2025 17:28

You know your DS best so I don't think YABU to go with whatever you think, but I will say My DS7 absolutely loves his Tonie Box. He used to like the Paw Patrol, Disney and Mr Men Tonies when he was little. Now he has a lot of the 'older' kids Tonies such as the Captain Underpants books, Roald Dahl books and has just finished Kay's Incredible Inventions. He also likes Today with Tonies which is like a daily podcast with jokes, facts etc. There's a wide selection of non-fiction including National Geographic and Natural History Museum themed books, Women in Science, Horrible Histories and Ultimate Football Heroes books. They've just added a load of Minecraft books and the Chronicles of Narnia so I'll probably get him a couple for Christmas.

Psychologymam · 16/11/2025 17:35

We have both - yoto definitely for that age. You might be able to sell him on the mini version as it’s much easier for travel??

NoKnit · 16/11/2025 17:53

You know him best but consider you won't be giving him what he asked for. I personally would just get him what he asks for.

Are you going big on the Santa thing? Because I find it very odd people go all ib on santa for their kids for the magic and then don't get them what they actually ask for

Squiffy01 · 19/11/2025 22:10

1000% Yoto for that age. A much better selection of stories for older children (although tonies is slowly getting better). Cards so much easier to store as well then all the figures.

have popped a code up above for you to get some money off if you decide on a Yoto

Puppypower83 · 19/11/2025 22:18

We've had Yoto minis (2) for 4 or 5 years now and they are the best things we've ever bought our kids! They fall asleep listening to them every night (after being read a book). The Yoto make your own cards are great too, there are websites where you can download audio files (Bluey episodes a big hit for us). I love that the kids control them and select which cards they want

BraOffPjsOn · 22/11/2025 09:15

Thank you all - this has been really helpful!
I showed him the yoto last night and all the things it has but he is adamant he doesn’t want it so I think we will get him a tonies box and hopefully he will get lots of use out of it.

We may look at a yoto for my eldest’s birthday.

Tonies have upped their game in terms of catering to older children. I gave them feedback when asked last year and the two things I requested have incidentally happened- a Supertato tonie and more tonies for older children! They have Minecraft ones now and they have some older stories like Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Roald Dahl etc.

Having said this, I do think Yoto caters to older children much more. My DS is 7 but has a reading age of 10 so I think he may benefit more from the Yoto now.

I would say Yoto is a lot more versatile and has huge range of cards for all ages, plus radio, podcasts etc. My daughter has been using it since 3 and she's 6 now! Still listening every day and she absolutely loves it. I would recommend the mini version as it's easy to take along everywhere.

People always seem to be very ‘team Yoto’ or ‘team Tonie’ on here. I think that just shows that both work well. Both are starting to cater for older children. I’d buy what your son wants, they seem to retain value so you can always change later on.

crocodilesandwich · 06/12/2025 15:22

My 3 year old has a tonies and 9 year old has yoto- yoto is much better suited for older ages and is definitely the right choice for 6+. I’d show him the range of things available on the Yoto website and that should nudge him towards it

PenelopeSkye · 06/12/2025 15:22

Another vote for Yoto mini- we’ve had both and it’s a lot easier to travel with a book of Yoto cards than all those little figures. My eldest is 9 and definitely outgrew the tony, whereas the Yoto will last for years.

BraOffPjsOn · 07/12/2025 19:49

Thanks all - I followed your overall advice and showed him the yoto website and app but he said he didn’t want it.
so I’ve gone for Tonies as like lots of you said it’s what he’s asked for so hopefully it will still get lots of use.
I may try the yoto for my eldest (although he swallows books so I don’t know if that’s a bad idea as I don’t want him to read less!)
