Talk to me about perms... (please and thank you!)

So I'll be 50 in just over three years and I am determined to give myself a full on glow up before then. Perimenoblah has taken its toll unfortunately and I need to reclaim my goddess status so that by the time I sail into my fifth decade I feel and look fabulous. Rather than the sad potato I have become in the last year.

I need to deal with each issue at a time and December is going to be about sorting out my hair (and finding the right bright red lipstick for my skin tone - which I know is more than one issue, but it's a mini issue and I think it will be very helpful in terms of my confidence... and I support a red sports team, so I spend much of January - March wearing red! Watch out Sephora Cardiff...)

So please talk to me about perms. I have never had one before and my hair is naturally wavy (think mermaid hair I guess) but because it's fine it always looks a bit meh. I would like properly defined loose waves (if that's not a contradiction in terms) and am happy to do any maintenance required to keep them looking good. I'm hoping that the technology has come along since my friends at school had crispy curls in the 1980s/90s... or is that hopelessly naive? TIA!

I had one a couple of years ago, supposedly a modern 'cold' perm. Disaster. Crispy hair. Spent much time back in the reluctant hairdresser, first they did it again because it had mostly dropped out, then with K18 masks etc. Although they had strand tested it it was just not right for my menopausal hair.

If it's wavy already, get a defuser attachment and some curl products as a cheaper and less risky experiment first?
