Cut benefits before increasing council tax

As an increase in income tax is now out the window, the government will have to look at other ways to fill the gap by increasing a dozen smaller taxes. One option, I think they will opt for, is to apply a surcharge for homes in bands F,G&H. It would be politically expedient to do so because many people will assume those in such homes are wealthy.

We purchased our band f property earlier this year at £550k. We live in London and didn’t want to uproot our family, and move jobs, so decided to buy our 2.5 bed house.
After mortgage and bills, we have £100 to £200 left over, but some months have nothing. An increase would be so difficult to manage.

Why can’t the government have the courage to cut benefits. You can buy a BMW or Mercedes on the Mobility Scheme! Why?

This is hate speech.

I know. It gets said all the time on here.

Honestly, MN can be an absolute cesspit at times, especially when it comes to topics on benefits.
But not everyone is awful, and there are those of us that do understand and will fight your corner to the bitter end.

I have MS, work full-time and receive PIP. I give up the mobility component of my PIP for the use of an adapted car, which is leased, will never be mine, and for which I had to make a substantial down payment. You don't care about the details, you just want benefits cut. Which benefits and by how much, exactly? Would you rather i lost my PIP, my car and had to give up work? A single adult on UC receives about £400 a month. How is anyone supposed to survive when the spoilt middle-classes have done cutting what is already a pittance? Oh, and your apology is not accepted, btw.

spoiled middle classes?

Really?

Avantiagain · 16/11/2025 08:43

"Why the pile on to a vulnerable and disabled poster? Does it make you feel big to question her in such a way?"

Some posters get off on that, the sad fuckers that they are.

My reference, as I would have expected would be clear from the quote, was to the OP.

You call this spoiled middle class?

I apologise if I come across as lacking empathy. I had read a post on Reddit where a posted had claimed his relatives were all claiming these benefits even though they didn’t need to.

You read a post on Reddit? Oh well, that’s all right then, is it? How about you educate yourself on how pip and the motability scheme works? Then, come back with an educated and reasoned argument?

I don't think it's fair to call the OP 'spoiled middle class'. She sounds as if she has stretched herself much too thin and taken on a huge mortgage. Hardly a privilege to be in so much debt. Still, I totally understand why those with disabilities are heartily sick of all the disgusting comments and judgement.
As a country, we do have a lot of people off work long term for a variety of reasons. This number has increased recently and it is worth looking at why this is. A lot of it is because of the lack of help available from the NHS, which has clearly also worsened recently and because of the cumulative effect of economic and societal problems. A lot of these problems are ingrained now, unfortunately, and would cost a lot of £££ that is not available to try to tackle.

Correct that the OP has stretched herself too thin. Instead of pondering on ways to do something to help her own situation, she chose to believe some tripe that she read on some forum somewhere, and attack something she knew nothing about. How was that going to help her own situation? If we had a coherent, smooth, properly running NHS, that was not starved by the Cons, things would look a lot different, that has been widely acknowledged, on these threads.

So what of what you've written makes her 'spoiled middle class'?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/11/2025 09:54

She works, she struggles, she barely breaks even?

None of which has anything to do with disabled people.

That's fair. Unfortunately, the majority of people do believe what they read about repeatedly in the press, even though most of it is manipulative rubbish.
The governments, whether Tory, Labour or any other party (I have no affiliations!) want us all to be fighting like rats. The reality is that most people aren't having a great time, whether they are disabled or young, stretched 'middle class'.

None of which has anything to do with disabled people.

Of course it does.

She's worried that her tax is going to go up which will take even more of her wages.

How do you think the welfare budget is financed?

Has RR not already confirmed that this will not happen? Why attack just the disabled?

Livelovebehappy · 15/11/2025 17:07

The known benefit fraud might only make up 1% but we all know there are many more probably committing fraud who are not found out.

Do we all know that? Sounds like an assumption to me. And you know what that will make out of you...

Unless you are somehow clairvoyant? Or are you some kind of private investigator? Oh no wait, you must be a secret agent placed especially with the benefit fraud office that gets specialised information that they see but choose not to follow up...that must be it.

In this situation you are, in fact, Jon Snow. It's honestly laughable.

It also doesn't negate any of the points I made about a vast majority of people on benefits being in full time employment - so why don't you break the trend and comment on the factual and far more relevant points?

I'll bet you think yourself rather intelligent - whilst falling for the rich party line hook, line and sinker. It's ridiculous.

Where have I attacked the disabled?

Is it not a fact that welfare budget is growing and that it needs to be financed somehow?
Where do you think that money is going to come from?

Tax, of some description or borrowing. Neither of those are good option for the country.

Do people even know what they are actually arguing over do some of you realise that pip can be as low as under £30 a week for some claimants

But don't you understand her worries as well?

She's working, she's trying her best to house her family. Her tax will rise, one way or another. She is struggling.

Yet we have people calling her 'spoiled' and we have posters accusing her of attacking disabled people, the same people she's helping survive by paying her tax?
