Cut benefits before increasing council tax

As an increase in income tax is now out the window, the government will have to look at other ways to fill the gap by increasing a dozen smaller taxes. One option, I think they will opt for, is to apply a surcharge for homes in bands F,G&H. It would be politically expedient to do so because many people will assume those in such homes are wealthy.

We purchased our band f property earlier this year at £550k. We live in London and didn’t want to uproot our family, and move jobs, so decided to buy our 2.5 bed house.
After mortgage and bills, we have £100 to £200 left over, but some months have nothing. An increase would be so difficult to manage.

Why can’t the government have the courage to cut benefits. You can buy a BMW or Mercedes on the Mobility Scheme! Why?

No.

Maybe think of how hard it actually is to live on benefits rather than believing the shite you read in rags.

You are so embarrassingly out of touch and lacking in any sort of empathy for those that struggle every single day.

Im so sick of this belief that benefit claimants are living the life of Riley.

He does, about 50 a week minimum and he’s mid 60s.
Im not saying working people should work harder to fund benefits, I think we need to concentrate on the extremely wealthy.

The problem being that would not bring in enough money, so she is targeting the middle. The top 1% of earners already pay the highest proportion of tax.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 15/11/2025 17:16

My DH works stupid hours for a pittance (way below minimum wage) because he can do it around DS and his needs. So yes, you can have a disabled family member and still work long hours.

I only work 20hrs at present but that's because that was the job I could find after being made redundant.

No UC, we get DLA for DS and DH gets Carers Allowance.

Get advice.
you are not allowed to be paid less than minimum wage. Unless someone is earning cash on the side, which I am not suggesting your husband is doing.

The funny thing about all this hysteria over tax rises is that Jeremy Hunt actually cut the rate of NI by 4% before the last election.

I don't remember all this shrieking over tax when we were paying 4% more in NI - seems to be only a Labour government that generates this crap.

As for cuts we've had nothing but cuts for fourteen years and guess what - everything is now more expensive as a result! What do you think happened to all those kids growing up in poverty, the ones who didn't have access to Sure Start, to help from CAMS, to youth centres? They're all costing us more money now!

Agree re cutting services. YAs now on PIP because they got no help with mental health issues 5/10 years ago.

Oh FFS, another benefit bashing thread.

Because those of us claiming are living the life of Riley didn’t you know? Foreign holidays, sports cars, latest tech…

Honestly, you have no clue. If my benefits were reduced, we would be in serious difficulty. Our income barely covers the essentials (my husband works). But that’s ok is it? Because we are poor and deserve to be poorer?

But do you realise that increases in tax are sending others into poverty, how is that fair? Do you see the OP saying she has £100 to £200 left and has no benefits?

Yet another poster who doesn’t understand how the scheme works.

No she chooses to be like that. She is always on these threads, spouting nonsense, the record never changes.

Tbh I'm sick of the belief that middle-income earners are all living the life of Riley too.

I'd love to know the many ways round this criteria please. I'm a wheelchair user and had to go to Tribunal to get higher rate PIP, so I look forward to your reply

Ageee! My DH has MS & only got lower rate until he could barely walk. I would be shocked if anxiety would give you
enough points for Higher rate mobility component of PIP. Lower rate, possibly but that doesn't qualify you for a Motability lease.

AnneShirleyBlythe · 15/11/2025 19:06

Boomer55 · 15/11/2025 16:13

Motability is a charity. If you get the mobility component of DLA/PIP you can either use it on a Motability car or spend it on whatever,

No one would save a penny if Motability stoppped tomorrow. 🤷‍♀️

I think those that want rid of Motability also want disability benefits cut to the bone too.

Or don’t listen when Labour say taxes won’t go up. They will.

🥱

.. So OP .. your words - have you had an answer to your poorly juxtaposed examples yet?
Do you realise that the Motability scheme has fuck all to do with your choices?

I’m glad paying more makes you yawn. How much are you coughing up?

Overthemhills · 15/11/2025 19:32

@EasternStandard
Your asserted claim that taxes will go up seems very much at odds with what the media now reports - all speculation of course- so do tell what your insights are?

I haven't read many of her other posts but think she is very loudly anti Labour. She perhaps doesn't realise that the Tories also increased taxes and that, if they had been voted in instead of Labour, or any other party instead, they would be in the same position and would also be increasing taxes. I see the Farage has been tearing up his manifesto from 2024 already now that there is a realistic chance that his party may win in 2029.

‘She’ I think the pp was referring to the other poster. If you’re referring to me 😂 I can see your post.

Yes Labour are increasing tax in some way. Some will yawn as it’s not them coughing up as usual.

You too? As long as it’s not you paying?

You think that having £100-£200 left over after mortgage and bills is poverty?

It's clearly far too much wealth, best tax it and redistribute it.

When someone’s answer to solving the problems in the country is to fuck over the disabled it says more about them than anything else!

No, but that is her current situation, which will be made worst , and I do think having NO money left over is poverty. Benefits are all well and good but there is no magic money tree and the government's solution is taxing workers more and more pushing them into poverty, instead of taxing billionaires. People on benefits seem to not care either where the money comes from as long as they get theirs, but we have to be realistic.

If you are not disabled, then the amount of UC you are expected to live on is about £400pm.
People on that get into debt, use food banks etc. And you want to cut it more?
