To just give up and not bother!

It seems that under a Labour government being hard working and aspirational just means you get punished for being so.

Looks like rather than working 50 hour weeks in good jobs (which contributes to the economy) is a waste of time and effort - easier to give up and just claim benefits. Less stress, more time to put your toes up. Seems like a no brainer!!

Reeves plans to add an additional tax onto homes in London and the South East apple.news/AIieFo3k_T4eMKy7kNy7lgw

This is going to completely stagnate the housing market as no one will want to move to the properties with the additional charges which will be ON TOP of the council tax charges.

All the 1000s of horrible ‘luxury’ homes that have been built across much of the farmland in the south east in the last 6 months won’t sell; there will be a bun fight for the few affordable homes that the developers grudgingly shoehorn into the corner of the plot - because they have to; and the whole ‘Labour are going to build their way out of this financial mess that the Tories left for us to deal with’ will be shot in the foot because developers don’t want to build affordable housing. They want to build 4 and 5 bed houses because that’s how they get their money.

So, AIBU? Is it actually worth working your arse off under a Labour Government or shall we all sack off our jobs that allow us to live in nice houses and claim back all the tax we’ve paid into the system over the years in benefits?

Yeah, but they’re all on benefits so the hypothetical cost is meaningless, isn’t it?

I think you're being unkind and likely trying to goad me. Hope your evening and life gets a little better 😘

Couldn’t agree more, but in a discussion about tax burdens and the relative ‘ease’ of instead claiming benefits and not bothering to be aspirational, it’s a bit rude (and silly) to say ‘meh, I’m not bothered about them’!

To be honest I agree with the point about it being a bit rude and silly... on any post! We shouldn't all race to the bottom to be the hardest done by.

However as someone originally from the South East who no longer lives there I can sometimes understand where the frustration comes from as it does suck up a lot of the bandwidth and attention. However to your point, that's a separate issue than piling on someone's post about something else.

Tbh this is what people voted got. Did people not know what Labour are about? Might be 14 years since they were last in government but I mean they've always made clear who and what they are so I feel this news shouldn't be that much of a shock...

Agreed. I’m a northerner now living in the south. I TOTALLY appreciate the south/London-centric nature of our media - it’s very annoying, but that’s not the fault of the people living there.

YABU to think it's even an option. The only way you could do this is to take a minimum wage job and claim UC as a top up. That would be legal. The DWP won't expect you to explain why you quit your £100k+ a year job to go work minimum wage. But it wouldn't lead to a living situation that's any less stressful than the one you've got now and it'd likely be a lot more uncomfortable, so I'm not sure what you think you'd gain? If you can see some way it would improve your quality of life and want to go for it then crack on.

But you can't "give up your job and go on benefits" , AKA not work, which is I suspect what you meant, any more than anyone else can. It's a myth that this is an option.

I miss the time when pre budget was covered by purdah and there were no discussions and anxiety about what ifs.

This 'incompetent' government inherited a half destroyed country after 10 years of Tory rule

Every part of the infrastructure has had funds removed, partially privatised and completely run into the ground

When did I praise idiots before them?

It doesn't absolve them of the damage they have already done since coming to power. A budget for growth? The only things growing are the politics of envy, a lack of personal responsibility, the number of young and skilled tax payers leaving the country, and the number of mandates for insolvency teams.

Goddessoftheearth · 26/11/2025 20:31

Well I think today’s budget has just answered that question! Tax middle England earners more and put it into the benefits system. I’ll be watching day time telly with my income support with my toes up once I’ve folded my small business. Thank you so much for giving me this chance to ‘retire’ early!
