To think November/December aren’t as dead for recruitment as people make out?

Everyone always says “nothing happens in recruitment over Christmas” but in my experience that’s really not true. I’ve seen roles advertised, interviews booked and even offers made right up to the end of the year.
Sure, some organisations slow down but others seem to rush to hire before budgets reset or before January competition spikes.

AIBU to think that the idea that recruitment completely dies in Nov/Dec is exaggerated and that it’s actually still a decent time to apply?

For my current role, I signed the contract a few days before Christmas. However the process was a bit drawn out so I think I initially applied at the end of October

Bestwishes23 · 14/11/2025 22:53

I think it depends on the sector

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/11/2025 23:03

I’m a recruiter and we’re busier than we’ve been all year
ifs probably a bit late now to get new starters in before Christmas but that doesn’t mean we stop until the new year. About a week either side of Christmas however nothing will be happening

gilesfaithbuffyangel · 14/11/2025 23:05

I lost my job last Tuesday (no fault of my own!)
had 3 interviews this week. 2 offers and accepted 1 to start next week

You are actually really thinking about this? Really? Why?

MasterBeth · 14/11/2025 23:07

I’m hiring now.

I'm the recruitment coordinator for my company (science and tech industry) and we've got more vacancies at the moment than we've had for probably the last three months combined - it's suddenly gone absolutely manic. We're actually trying to hold some back now so they're advertising over Christmas or in the new year.

Because I’m job-hunting at the moment so timing matters. I’ve heard mixed things about recruitment slowing down this time of year, so I was wondering about other people’s experiences.

I’m a Career Coach and in my experience there’s normally less roles advertised in December because a lot of companies wait until the New Year but also a lot of candidates decide to wait until the New Year so the competition is normally less for the vacancies that are advertised. I know of lots of people who have successfully secured roles in November and December

JaceLancs · 14/11/2025 23:49

I need to recruit for maternity cover
will probably start advertising mid December with a closing date mid Jan
Many people are at a loose end during Xmas period and might have more time to apply
Hoping to interview end of Jan with a start date of mid to end of Feb

Urmam · 14/11/2025 23:52

I expect it's hugely sector/job specific? I have two interviews in the next two weeks and I'm being very picky where I am looking at the moment so it's not been a hard push. But my skillset is in demand at the moment

Urmam · 14/11/2025 23:58

I often put roles out in mid /late December if I can on the basis the winter bream /new year may be a time when people reflect and make plans to move and change

KitTea3 · 15/11/2025 00:11

I agree it probably dependent on sectors

In retail there almost always used to be a recruitment drive for Christmas temps, a fair few who ended up staying on perm after. I genuinely dont think we have recruited Christmas temps since COVID . 😬We also used to have a thing where students could transfer easily between their home and uni shops and that has also been withdrawn.

YANBU. I’ve found it a very good time to look for a new job. Circumstances resulted in me having to look for a new job in November early on in my career and I was back in work the first week of December.

I’ve received offers in November and started jobs in either November or December 4 times to date and one of those happened in 2020! Different sectors too - higher education, local government, manufacturing and banking.
I think fewer people are looking that time of year though, possibly in some cases under a misapprehension that recruitment dies in November/December.

HoskinsChoice · 15/11/2025 05:19

November isn't Christmas. In a typical year, November is one of the busiest months for recruitment. It does start to quieten down from the beginning of December then drop quite a lot once you get to mid-December right through until the second week of Jan when it starts to pick up again. (That's for senior/Director/NED appts, not sure about junior/mass market roles).
