AIBU if I report this to 101 after woman screamed at me?

I was sat in my car this afternoon, checking my shopping list when a car flew past the front of my car and swung into the space next to me. A woman got out the passenger side and smacked her door straight into mine.
I jumped and looked up, obviously not impressed. She said sorry initially (in a sarcastic tone) then started to scream at me when I got out my car to see if there was any damage. I hadn’t said a word at this point.

I was so taken back by her abuse, I’m finding it really hard to remember exactly what she said but there was lots of swearing and screaming at me. The driver then got out and wasn’t much nicer (but he wasn’t as abusive).
They then both went into the local shop while I stood there, checking my car. I don’t actually think there is any damage but it’s hard to see in the pouring rain.
A lady witnessed it and told me to move my car incase they do anything to it on return.
I stupidly didn’t get her details but she did tell me where she worked.
I moved my car but as I was getting out, they whizzed past me, beeping.
It pisses me off that people like this get away with such anti-social behaviour. AIBU to report this to 101 due to the abuse or would I just be wasting everyone’s time and what’s it going to achieve anyway? Thanks. Xx

That would be pointless.

shoppingat · 14/11/2025 20:40

Op kindly this all sounds very very dramatic, the language here is so over the top
Yes the woman sounds unkind and a bit bonkers but seriously the police have better things to be dealing with my goodness.

Arlanymor · 14/11/2025 20:40

If your car was damaged then report it. People being twats is unfortunately an everyday occurrence, isn't breaking any law, and you wouldn't get anywhere.

RoseAlone · 14/11/2025 20:42

Not sure what you think you'd be reporting and why you think the police would be even vaguely interested. There's nothing to report.

vincettenoir · 14/11/2025 20:43

YNBU to feel aggrieved about such bad behaviour. But I do agree with pp that reporting it would be a waste of your time.

Bushmillsbabe · 14/11/2025 20:45

Would there have been cctv? I'm not sure if damaging a car and then driving off counts as 'hit and run' possibly. You would need evidence to take it anywhere, and might be better pursuing through your insurance if you have their registration and if damaged.

They didn't drive off, they parked next to her.

I don't think it would achieve much to report it OP. Put it behind you and move on.

Yellowbrixlane · 14/11/2025 20:50

Yeah, think my question was answered.
I won’t waste anyone’s time. Just not used to someone screaming and swearing at me for no reason (esp as I hadn’t said a word).
I’ll put it down to bad experience.

Honestly since Covid I feel general public behaviour has got really bad. Some areas worse than others. Lot of mental health problems not going treated, lot of people stressed because of COL crisis taking it out on others (no excuse I know). It’s best just to ignore, you also never know who’s got a knife or otherwise- without being dramatic. If your property or person isn’t harmed- just move on and frame it as an unfortunate and upsetting experience that’s over now.

Cherryicecreamx · 14/11/2025 21:15

Yeah I don't like the idea of people behaving in such a manner and getting away with it either. A 101 would be to report a crime, and not sure what they can do about a one off antisocial behavior that has already passed.
Some people are just shitty, but it's always a reflection of them rather than you. But I would be taken aback with the lack of respect as well.

Check your car in the morning just in case too but it’s a public order offence. I’d ring 101 you’ll have to in 24 hours if there’s been damage anyway.

Yellowbrixlane · 14/11/2025 21:23

I suppose my thought process on reporting it would be to help create a picture if this couple have form for this type of behaviour. But as no crime was committed, it would be a waste of time.

They sound like arseholes was there anything like had you parked well? Did you cut them of a few minutes before or anything like that. Not that it excuses there behaviour but it would explain it

Yellowbrixlane · 14/11/2025 21:29

No, I’d parked carefully and had sat in my car a good few minutes before they arrived, sorting out my shopping list (and wishing I’d picked up my umbrella).

But with any type of vehicle accident where damage or injury has occured, you are supossed to exchange contact details and insurance details. If someone refuses to do this the police can be contacted

I was responding to that fact you called it a 'hit and run'.

A crime had been committed if she swore at you with intent to cause fear to you, it’s called a public order offence;

Section 4 of the Public Order Act 1986 makes it an offence to use threatening, abusive, or insulting words or behaviour with the intent to cause fear of immediate unlawful violence. This also includes distributing or displaying threatening, abusive, or insulting writings, signs, or other visible representations. The act requires intent, not just a careless action, and it is tried only in a magistrates' court as a summary offence

Hi OP
I am a police officer.
Please do report this, there are online chat functions and you can do it anonymously on Crmestoppers too. Doesn't have to be 101.

Most posters are right that this is not likely to go anywhere tbh, but exactly for the reason of intel gathering this could be very useful to police.
Say for example they committed other crimes later on, or had been involved in something else already more serious, you can say they were here, this was their demeanour, their car was this, clothing was that etc.
It can be very useful if needed.

Also, as a side point, it depends on what she said, how she said it, but if she was shouting and swearing she has probably committed a public order offence and some more diligent officers would record and investigate this. If your car has dashcam for example it'd be a lot more likely to progress.

As it is, please set your expectations that nothing is likely to come from it but if you want it recorded or just are happy to record they were there and behaving in this manner then please do consider reporting it.

Thanks

MagentaRocks · 14/11/2025 23:31

The car door hitting your car is not a car accident it is a civil issue

The abuse is a public order offence and can be recorded as such. If you have their registration number then there is a line of enquiry and they should investigate although it is minor and some areas won’t investigate this sort of thing.

Yellowbrixlane · 15/11/2025 07:26

Thank you. Some really useful information here that I wasn’t aware of.

I guess I’m lucky that I very rarely experience this kind of behaviour. The gathering of intel is a good point and did cross my mind.
