To get a new (to me) car, just because I want one?

So, my current car is okay - an automatic petrol family car - I don't like driving it. It is totally fine, no issues, still has 3 years left on the manufacturer warranty, but I just don't enjoy driving it! It feels heavy and slow to accelerate. I really want a smaller electric runaround (electric corsa) and can sell my petrol car for an electric corsa of similar age for the same price.

It's not one brand vs another, but it's whether ibu to be self-indulgent, with the risk of getting a car that may go wrong because it wouldn't have the equivalent warranty... but then an EV doesn't have an engine to go wrong, does it? And will have a remaining 4 year battery guarantee.

Sensible me says no, keep the family car.

Fun me says yes, sell the family car and get the little, electric run-around that you want!

Money is no issue here (cash buyer as new purchase = price of selling old car), but I wouldn't usually get rid of a car just because I fancied a different one. I just wonder if it's too 'irresponsible' to sell a perfectly working car still with manufacturer warranty for a new-to-me car, just because I want one?!

If you can afford it, then why not? Plus they keep trying to convince us that electric cars are better for the environment

Do you need a family size car though, a corsa is quite small depending on whether you have to squeeze in car seats or gangly teenagers ?
But I absolutely love my electric car, I have a cute little one called a leapmotor, I love it!
Electric cars are certainly lovely to drive.
The older I get the more I think just do it !!

YANBU to change your car for any dn reason you please.

IMHO YABU to get an electric car. But that’s just my opinion.

SpottyAardvark · 14/11/2025 17:12

YANBU.

It’s just a car. If you don’t like driving it, it’s completely fine to sell it & buy one that you do. I would definitely recommend a proper test drive of new car, though, and careful research into whether battery range is adequate for your needs. Also, can you charge it at home? If so, all good. If not, charging can be very inconvenient & very expensive.

This is going to turn into an electric v petrol debate ….
We have two electric. And a home charger. We live in rural Scotland. There are plenty of chargers around , we aren’t going to run out of charge in a remote glen, you can see how many miles you’ve got , same as petrol, in fact electric is probably more accurate. You can see how many miles you’ve will have left when you reach your destination before you’ve even left home. We drive 500 miles each way to Devon twice a year and have no problems charging. And with an EV tariff it saves us an absolute fortune. Great acceleration- something to do with torque whatever that is ! Did I mention I love my electric car!

Sahara123 · 14/11/2025 17:18

Good point about range , they do vary

Ruggerlass · 14/11/2025 19:31

Not unreasonable at all. I changed my car because I fancied different colour. Same car just a different colour!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad you all think ianbu!! I get quite anxious about cars going wrong and can't help but think 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it'... But I know that's just my anxiety.

Our other car is an electric car, so it really is just a case of whether I swap this one for an ev also! We personally loveee our electric car and hate driving the old petrol one! 😬
