To refuse to refund?

I sold a washing machine on face book two months ago, it was just over a year old.
I know it was working as i used it the day before putting it up for sale and was perfect.
I even offered to show it to them working, but they refused and asked me to disconnect it.
Two ladies came to collect and had to help them lift it into the back of their car.

Nearly two months later have just had a message to say they have just tried to use it for the first time as they have just moved house and the water isn't draining. They are looking for me to either fix it or refund.

Am i right in saying no. I know it was working when i sold it and have no way of knowing what has happened between now and then?

Wow! That is some cheeky fuckery right there!!

Imfat · 14/11/2025 15:02

Sold as seen. No chance of a refund. Block them

TreeDudette · 14/11/2025 15:03

Ha ha ha - absolutely they can jog on. Just block them.

Bushwoolie · 14/11/2025 15:05

Absolutely not. They can't prove they've not used it to excess (same as you cannot now prove it was working but that was their decision).

Arlanymor · 14/11/2025 15:08

Caveat emptor. Tell them to have a look on YouTube for how to clear the drainage - no need to call a plumber, I bet it's the filter at the front and if it's just started doing it, it's like that THEY put something in the last load that got trapped, like a kirby grip or something.

BadgernTheGarden · 14/11/2025 15:09

There are transit bars in washing machines that you are meant to keep and put back on if you move them, so that could be a problem either when you moved it or when they did. Where have they been keeping it, and have they checked the filter and the drain hose (any lose debris might have got lodged somewhere) and got the drain hose at the right height etc. But pumps do just die. I don't think they can blame you two months later, who knows what has happened in between times.

Why were you selling a one year old washing machine?

Zov · 14/11/2025 15:11

Tell them you will see them in court.

It was actually my mums machine, and she passed away so was part of the house clearance. That's why it was like new, by the time we got it for her as her old one broke she had already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and couldn't learn how to use it, so it was just used for things like tea towels when i was round there, as i did her main washing at home

OP posts:
Everyothernamewasalreadyinuse · 14/11/2025 15:20

That's why i deliberately tested it as i knew it hadn't been used in about 6 weeks as she had been in hospital

Yeah, ignore. They have zero legs to stand on

Seawolves · 14/11/2025 15:38

That's the chances you take when you buy secondhand from a private seller, tell them no refund.

ilucgaiaw · 14/11/2025 16:02

No refund.
They could have damaged it in transport.

It's tough shit.
If you buy a washing machine from a private seller it's buyer beware.

Anyahyacinth · 14/11/2025 16:03

Ignore them, a way to go for the future would be to film things working. They have no right to a refund after all this time

Snowflakecentral · 14/11/2025 16:03

You should ALWAYS use transit bars when moving a wash mach. It hepls stablise the drum and provents damage.
It tough on them but the law says 'as seen' . Not your problem once they've seen it, paid for it and taken it away, you offered to demonstrate that it worked.
As someone said probably a blockage.

ahoyshipmate · 14/11/2025 16:05

Block and get on with your day

BillieWiper · 14/11/2025 16:05

That's ridiculous. Why the fuck would they leave it unused for that long? They clearly have been using it and it broke so they're chancing their arm.

Just say 'it worked fine when I sold it to you. You refused a demo. I will not discuss it further.'
Then block the CFs.

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 14/11/2025 16:13

It never ceases to amaze me some of the cheeky bastards out there. They shouldn’t be bothering you with this nonsense after all this time. Agree with everyone else that you should do diddly squat.

Whammyammy · 14/11/2025 16:16

Probably trying it on. Either way it's a private sale and sold as seen. If they wanted warranty they should of went to AO/Currys

BMW6 · 14/11/2025 16:31

Absolutely no.

RedFlagsAllOver · 14/11/2025 16:44

No, just say very sorry but after this length of time there's nothing you can do.
Sorry for the loss of your mum op. It's stressful enough without chancers like that.

Everyothernamewasalreadyinuse · 14/11/2025 16:49

Thank you everyone for your replies.
Think i had got myself into a tizz as it was so unexpected, that you begin to doubt yourself.

Going through the same thing but I bought new machine £459.99, ,which doesn't work and no one will take responsibility, I definitely insist on getting your money even mentioning the small courts, they are being unfair and if it took them 2 months to start using washer that is dubious. I hope it works out

Globules · 16/11/2025 17:35

Have they moved into a new build? If so, it could be the drainage pipes are sealed.

I made this mistake. Binned a decent washing machine I'd moved from the old house as it wasn't draining.

The new one didn't drain either... And then I found out the pipe was still sealed and I needed to unplug. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Did you buy it with a credit card? The lenders might try to get the money back for you.
