Xmas music in shops

The original psychological effects of the reasons behind playing Xmas music in shops - making people feel jolly, spending more time and money because they are feeling jolly have long gone.

Now it makes both customers and staff miserable. Customers sympathise with staff having to put up with the dirge of 30-40 songs on a loop. Then customers spend less time in shops and spend more online or via click n collect.

So why do retailers still play Christmas music when it’s bad for MH (as well as it’s awful such as Mud’s dreary one)

I worked at a supermarket and the music was playing when store was closed! Pulled out the tannoy mike as when that was used - it cut off the music.

I cannot listen to Christmas music now. Have to mute/skip tv esp adverts. Last year I rang a call centre and the hold music was Xmas! I couldn’t remember which company it was for.

Yet don’t have this issue with carols I love them

I suppose the obvious question is why do you state things as if they’re absolute farts and apply to everyone? I often merrily (see what I did there!) hum along to Christmas music in shops.

Oh jeez, who let out all the humbugs today?! 🤣🎄

Don’t worry @Fayaway - 35yo fellow retail “fool” here 😉 Some of us have to be or everyone would be buggered when it came to getting their Christmas shopping 👍🏻 doesn’t pay great but it’s enough for what we need and fits in well with our childcare needs so I’ll be a “fool” 👍🏻

Have worked in retail since I was 15 and still love Christmas music 😂🎄 although, in fairness I have full control over what is played and we have dozens of playlists to pick from so it’s less repetitive than some other places. Strict 1st December rule here too - but from then on it’s Christmas music, staff free to wear Christmas jumpers/accessories if they wish, and some fun festive games to keep staff morale up 🤷🏻‍♀️

😂 thank you for your service. And the Christmas music. 😊

If I ruled the world Christmas music and switching on of Christmas lights in public places, and Christmas TV adverts would be prohibited until the first Sunday in Advent. Wouldn't stop anyone filing their boots at home, listening to Christmas music on their headphones while shopping, if they like to start early. That seems a perfectly reasonable "compromise" and balance.

Slothey · 14/11/2025 10:02

I totally love it. There are bits of every job that are shit, I guess.

Work for a retailer for a few Christmases and you will change your mind.

Friends that loved Christmas music then worked in retail over Christmas and now can’t stand the music

Well I work in a high street retail business (although I don’t technically work in “retail” myself) and have done for 25 years.

I love the Christmas music and I’m happy that it’s started. I do think it’s “too early” and it’s not Christmas yet, but I don’t care as I just love the music!

We get a mix of Christmas songs and other good non-Xmas songs, whereas in all the rest of the year we just get totally shit songs you’ve never heard of that these days are probably written by AI.

You don’t speak for everyone or even everyone who works in retail…

Absolute farts? Are we still talking about Celia Imrie on Celebrity Traitors?

beguilingeyes · 14/11/2025 10:04

It's just too bloody early. Christmas seems to start in August now. I hate it. Ban everything til December1st.

But for many of us, a "foolish sector" is appropriate for us at that stage of our life. Thousands of students work in retail around their studies because it's part time and flexible. They need/want 10 hours or 12 hours a week, they want a job they don't have to think about out of work, they don't want responsibility or a "career". People who have young children and juggle caring for them with another adult who is working full time might take an evening/weekend job in a supermarket or convenience store because it suits them and their circumstances. Older people who have retired again want a flexible job which isn't demanding in terms of responsibility.

Saying that an entire sector is foolish and/or the people working there are fools just shows a total lack of thought and the inability to consider the huge range of reasons why someone might be working in Primark or the Co-Op.

And whatever their reasons, they have the right not to listen to Noddy Holder on repeat for a 4 or 6 hour shift.

I literally said ‘We all make our choices’.
We are all entitled to make the choices that suit us best. Why is this so difficult to understand?
I’ve done some difficult jobs in my time - working in a pea factory was a particular low for me, as I hate wearing wellies and smelling of brine - but I would and have never worked in retail. MY choice.

Whoops! Facts.

purpleygrey · 14/11/2025 10:20

It doesn’t make me feel miserable at all. I bloody love Christmas.

BauhausOfEliott · 14/11/2025 10:29

I worked in retail and hospitality when I was younger.

Here's the thing: Christmas music does make more people buy more stuff. That's not necessarily because customers enjoy it (although obviously some people really do) but because it's a subconscious reminder that Christmas is approaching and they need to prepare, so they buy things. It's the same reason shops decorate early, and have Christmas products on the shelves in September, etc. They do it because - no matter how much customers claim it doesn't work on them - it absolutely does work, whether it's enjoyable or not.

The music does get repetitive for staff but to be honest, non-seasonal music is often quite a limited playlist anyway and almost as repetitive over the course of a couple of months. Plus, most workers just stop being conscious of it after a while - they're so used to it that it becomes part of the background, or they're so busy that they're just focusing on other things.

October 27th, East Midlands Outlet, Deck the bloody halls. Walked out of the shop

I'm not very keen on Christmas music. But asda this morning were playing that awful Fleetwood Mac song where they make sex noises at the end, not what you want to hear when you're skipping down the veg isle.

Exactly find a Xmas double CD in a charity shop from 30 years ago and one on sale on Amazon. All the same songs bar one. The CS has a child paedo on it replaced by Destiny’s Child Xmas one

I’ve been listening to Christmas music since July Grin

The toy retailer, The Entertainer starts playing Xmas music two months before Christmas. Yet closed on Sundays, even when 23/24 Dec is on Sunday as CEO is a devout Christian.

I don’t get that

The Entertainer changed now.
The owner retired and all the staff own it co-op style or something.
Now open on Sundays and now selling the previously forbidden Harry Potter and Pokémon toys.
But even before.... they're a toy shop. Christmas is their thing 😂

It's a good toy shop.
If you need toys it's an excellent place to go.
(It's only recently changed - in the last couple of months or so)

SwordToFlamethrower · 14/11/2025 14:46

I despise it with such a passion that I either avoid shops for 6 weeks, or if I absolutely must, I wear headphones with music on loud that I like.

It's obnoxious and boring I used to love the season, but crap like this, along with how forced it is has made me hate it.

Berlinlover · 14/11/2025 15:36

smallglassbottle · 14/11/2025 15:50

It's just one of the reasons why I avoid the shops. Lidl don't play music and always shop there anyway. I order anything else I need, online.
