Walk to school today storm Claudia?

Can anyone tell how bad it will be today in North London?

I have a 6yo and 4yo. 4yo not attending school temporarily for health reasons (not ones affected by rain).

The walk to school takes us 40 mins due to 4yo. 4yo does the walk both ways with me at drop off and pick up, so 2x 40 mins twice a day.

We don't have a car and my husband is away so can't leave 4yo with anyone.

How bad will this storm be? What's the chance we will get to school fine then it will be risky at pick up? Or is it just going to be just a bit rainy but basically fine?

I’m on north London and there is not a bit of wind. The birds are chirping, everything is peaceful. There aren’t any high winds predicted here today according to my app. Winds are predicted to be 11mph at the most which is not a high wind. A high wind is over 30mph, so you and your family will be fine. It’s looking like a good day for a walk!!

I'm in the Midlands and it's going up to 37km winds. Don't know if London is doing the same but I think it's more in the middle getting the worst. It's awful now😠

You won’t get soggy if you have appropriate outerwear, which you should have if you’re walking to and from school everyday.

It sounds like you’re just looking for an excuse not to walk to school 🤷‍♀️

If OP has a 6 year old in the school, that means she is currently in her second or third year of doing that walk four times a day. It doesn't sound like she's someone who is trying to make life easy for herself.

@Devilsmommy I'm on my way to work i London, it is definitely less rubbish here. It's currently an averagely grey and damp November morning. Grotty and dark but nothing to wrote home about.

TBH unless I was a tree surgeon or sky diver, 37 mph winds are not really something I would get worked up about.

Nothing that takes us there unfortunately. If it's just rainy that's fine, would only be worried if it's really stormy and 4yo would be both drenched and blown about!

Really? Not a single bus train or tube that goes even part of tha way? I find that hard to believe in London

It could well be that, if there is a bus, it only covers a small portion of the journey, so it's hardly going to be worth OP coughing up potentially over £5 a day to travel something like a quarter or a third of the journey on it.

It’ll be this. Any PT technically covering the journey is more trouble than it’s worth.

When exactly did strong winds and heavy rain become "named storms"?
Once upon a time it would be a case of "put your big coat on today" 🤣
Now the slightest puff of wind and a heavy shower seems to invoke hysteria.
Although......I admit that when my kids were little and I didnt drive, if the weather was horrendous they had a day off.
That was back in the days when you didnt get fined for not taking your kids to school 😉

It’ll be more of an issue on the roads than walking. More vehicles of those who would walk or cycle if it were dry, surface water and flooding, low visibility, people not driving to conditions. The pavements will be fine. Wear boots. I’m not sure how severe weather would need to be to be classed as unmanageable to walk in? Certainly not anything that a yellow warning would bring. High snow drifts and very extreme winds is the only thing I can think of. Neither of which is forecast. I’d probably look into long term options though as it sounds a real drag to do every day regardless of weather

I’m in Scotland and wouldn’t even notice a 37 mph wind apart from to stick an extra peg on the clothes on the line if it was forecast to get much stronger than that

BadWeatherQuestion · 14/11/2025 09:44

Nope! The busses don't go in the right direction and school isn't near the tube station.

The walk was fine though, not even that rainy! Fingers crossed for pick up

I think a combinaton of heavy rain and strong wind that would make a small person unstable on their feet. But fine here tbh

Yes I think the combination of the named storm and the weather warning made me think it might be something concerning. Maybe it is more extreme in some places but in my area it's just a bit grim and rainy so far...

i think we have worse wind here, 30 with gusts of 52 and the weather hasn’t even been remarked upon. My weather app describes it as a moderate breeze and we are well outside any warning area (Scotland)

I’m in the NW and it’s pretty awful here, howling wind

BadWeatherQuestion · 14/11/2025 11:47

It sounds like other places have got the worst of it. Hope it's not too bad and no one has any floods!

Just came onto say this. There are some proper miserable people about aren’t there? Always attributing the worst sort of motives to others.
