Americans taking over

So after some advice on if it’s like this in the whole of the Caribbean. Away as a British family on holiday. 4 of us. There’s an abundance of sun loungers at the huge resort. For example came down to pool at 9am. Went for breakfast and back at the pool we were the only people sat in our space.
yesterday a family came down after us. Decided to take 8 loungers in the row we are in, took another 6 in front (nearer the pool) various family ages including little children. Huffing a puffing as we have one extra lounger for bags etc. floor is wet as by pool and no where to hang bags up.
today. Said family also not happy another family has 4 loungers. After an hour they all leave (thank god as unbelievably loud) . Another family fill the gap with friends. Here’s my issue.. same new family of yesterday turn up and are complaining they only have one lounger (the one next to them is our 5th spare one) none of their friends offer to give up a longer and there’s 5 kids under 12 all with a lounger they’re not using as in pool or on beach. Ffs it’s like they want our spare lounger but their own friends won’t give up one. I’ll be honest I like having the gap too as they’re all so flipin loud . Currently lunchtime and there’s loads of loungers elsewhere. Are all Americans this entitled.. never experienced this in Europe

Don't mention the Germans and their towels on loungers OP. 😄

I read it that the American family are taking up 12 loungers for their 5 kids, but still wanting the one OP's family's extra one, despite there being loads of loungers going spare with no person or bags on them. Maybe they can't be arsed to go move one and want OPs because its nearer.

The only 12 mentioned is the age of the children

OP is complaining that one large family, with friends around, have taken up a number of loungers (but possibly only 1 per person) which includes some loungers for children who are currently in the pool. The friends have come to join them but there's only 1 lounger near the family as OP's bags have one. OP thinks the children shouldn't be allowed a lounger as they are playing in the pool and her bags are more important

You're lucky you never encountered my (British) Nanny on holiday. She'd throw your bags into the pool and tell you they don't need a lounger. I've always kept my bag on the lounger I'm using. On the rare occasion I've even taken a bag down to the pool!

Sorry I only mentioned American as it’s years since we where in the Caribbean but we’ve noticed this with 4-5 families already who are all American so highlighting purely to find out if it’s normal for them. Not meant in a rude way just wanting a view if it’s normal
I agree we completely don’t need to have a 5 lounger either and it’s purely so things don’t get wet on the floor. There’s plenty of loungers behind us still empty.

You’ve not been to any resorts in the Med with the British getting up at 6am to get all the sunbeds and then complaining at breakfast that there wasn’t any British food!

Next time go to Cuba if you want to go to the Carribbean and not have any Americans there

HermioneWeasley · 13/11/2025 20:18

Yes @Peripissedoff in a country with a population of 343 million people, every single one of them behaves like this.

JFC, are you usually so racist? And so lacking in self awareness that you describe other people as “entitled” when you’re taking up a lounger for your bags.

if this was about any other nationality, it would have been deleted

I think massive group holidays with extended family and/or friends is far more common in Americans than Brits (and maybe more common since covid) and you may hitting up against this a bit. It can be tricky for a big group to get enough of anything together. And they do tend to be pretty loud. I think taking up a lounger for your bags would be frowned upon by Brits and Americans, though. And probably small groups as well as large though smaller groups might be able to find alternatives more easily. Sure there are other loungers around, but they want to be near their group and, it sounds, these are more "prime" loungers as closer to the pool(?) which is normally a desired position.

So yes, I think it's like this across the whole Caribbean. You will find big groups from time to time who want to spend time together. You will find people huffing and puffing if you have a lounger in a desired spot that you're using for bags.
