To think most “anti-capitalists” would sell out in a heartbeat if offered enough money?

People hate wealth until it’s theirs. AIBU to think principles often collapse faster than morals when money’s on the table?

Speak for yourself. Actual wealth isn’t something important. Enough money for s9me luxury, sure, most of us would be tempted, but billions. Nope. If I got it by some quirk then I’d be giving to charity/funding some libraries/music lessons/something enriching.

Echobelly · 13/11/2025 15:50

Anti capitalists aren't necessarily anti wealth of any sort though? They're against exploitation and inequality.

An avowed anticapitalist might take a decent salary to, say, lead a conservation charity, but probably wouldn't take 10x the money to head a hedge fund because they would have moral issues with it. Plenty of people take a stance about what jobs they'll take - my DH would have an easier time of it if he accepted jobs in the City or with 'gaming' (aka gambling) firms where there's a lot of roles in his field, but he doesn't on principle.

Giving all of it to charity? Or most but keeping some for yourself and your friends and family?

Well, there's a group called Patriotic Millionaires who are petitioning the government to be allowed to pay more tax, so I guess not all wealthy people are wankers.

The only person I know who is a total lefty and inherited proper wealth used it to build a community facility and affordable housing, which I think was reasonably decent.

Anyone can send HMRC as much money as they want, over and above their own tax rate.

That's an interesting one. CEO's of major charities often have very high pay packets. DH's cousin used to run an very well known charity and earnt circa 260k per year and was a multi millionaire. If they were less greedy then they might do that job for less maybe? I think there is often an element of saying 'I earn a huge amount but I'm a good person as im working for a charity' which appeases their conscience. And that working for and trying to improve a less 'worthy' company can actually take more moral guts as to behave honourably then have to swim against the tide rather than just go with it?

You're paying for the CEO's skills. Would you pay a plasterer or an accountant less because you're a charity?

If you want a charity run well, you have to pay for the expertise. We've seen what happens when that expertise isn't present.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 13/11/2025 16:08

Yeah tbh

If it weren't made public, i think that most would

If it were public, i think that a lot would bend over backwards to justify them taking the money, ie sad life stories and charitable donations

This as someone who leans left 🤷‍♀️

surreygirly · 13/11/2025 16:10

99% would

MoFadaCromulent · 13/11/2025 16:14

Depends what you mean by sell out.

I'm anti capitalist and well off.
I have no choice but to engage in capitalism given it's the system I've been handed.

So I can either be anti capitalist and poor or anti capitalist and well off.

Actually, they're American. Founded by a woman.

I suppose you also theoretically have the other category of extremely rich people, who are anti capitalist because they're feudalist....

(Darling, people like us don't engage in the trades!")

I once worked for a major charity and the CEO thought he was humble because he was “only” taking a 6 figure salary as he could earn more “in the city”. He’d left “the city”’after many years accumulating wealth and a massive pension pot to “down scale” to the charity for his remaining working years.

Fair enough you might say - he was very successful in his field and no doubt made a lot of people a lot of money over and above himself.

But…..his mantra was that those of us working with the actual charity patients should volunteer ie work for free because it was a privilege to care for them so we shouldn’t want paying!

edited to add. The charity had huge amounts of money hidden deposited in various on shore and off shore accounts but could never find any money to improve services or give grants to patients. Another big fundraiser was always needed for that!

Greggsit · 13/11/2025 16:23

No. Look at the number of Extinction Rebellion that are from very privileged backgrounds. They already have money.

Yep, definitely had experience of that too.

And I am in no way suggesting that they should work for NMW, they are being paid for their skills and experience. But they should have to evidence this to get these massive salaries - show an increase in fundraising and increase in effectiveness of the support the charity is providing in a measurable way. Taking a huge salary while the charities frontline services are being cut is unethical.

Enough to make a difference. I don’t see the point in having more money than you can ever spend or than you need for a nice life. And that’s what we mean by rich, not someone earning a decent salary.
