Landlord or tenant to purchase and install?

For those specifically that rent, if you had a broken door handle which was slightly faulty when you moved in 1.5 years ago, would you expect to purchase and install a new one? Or would you expect the Landlord to purchase a new handle and have this installed instead?

Im a landlord and regularly replace and install door handles at my own expense. Its my actual door.

I would 100% expect the landlord to do this, unless I'd done something mental like pelt the door with rocks or whack it with a sledgehammer.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 13/11/2025 15:31

I'm an inventory clerk, that would be a landlord thing

Had you broken it and could find identical replacement then it would be a you think - acting in a tenant like manner

But most landlords prefer to know about such things and to fix them themselves, mostly to avoid the sometimes atrocious fuck ups some tenants go with!

As a tennant Id assume it's the landlords responsibility, but personally I'd do it myself. It's a cheap job to do, and I couldn't be bothered with the faff of reporting it and then arranging access and to be there.

I am a landlord. This is my responsibility. It's part of the fixtures and fittings of the house..

BillieWiper · 13/11/2025 15:41

Well it's their door and presumably the flat is meant to come with functioning doors.

Medexpert · 13/11/2025 15:41

If itcwas old and/or faulty, landlord. If it was newish and/or solid and good quality but someone decided to swing of it, tenant.

Motomum23 · 13/11/2025 15:43

I'd replace it myself - but then my cooker door has faulty hinges and I am replacing that myself too - told my landlady I didn't like the head escaping from the door as its not cooking well so did she want it stored or should I take it to the tip.
I like to think it's quid pro quo for her not raising my rent for the last 7 years - I do as much as I can and keep her informed, she gets stuff done I can't sort like when the living room wall fell down!

Thank you all!
