Wisdom teeth removal - risk of dry socket - terrified!

I need to have one of my lower wisdom teeth removed. I’m absolutely bricking it. I’m nervous about the procedure itself but even more so at the prospect of getting dry socket which I hear is both excruciating and common when having wisdom teeth removed, particularly when located in the lower jaw.
I know I sound a baby but I’m genuinely really scared.
How common is dry socket please? And how quickly would I be able to get help/relief if I got it? I’ve got visions of being in agony and not being able to be seen by a dentist. I should add what adds to my anxiety is my partner works away frequently , I have no family nearby and two really young kids, one with SEN, so I can’t really afford to be out of action in agony with dry socket.
Any dentists or anyone with any experience of this, I’d be really grateful for your advice! (Should have said wisdom 😂)

I've had a dry socket, it wasn't as bad as I expected. It was a horrible deep pain but they repacked and gave me antibiotics and I went to work that afternoon.

I don’t know how common dry socket is, but I had it about 10 years ago. I don’t know exactly what it was, but whatever the dentist shoved into the socket was very painful however the relief from pain was instantaneous!

I hope your extraction goes well and that you don’t get dry socket. But if you do, from my own experience the pain relief you can get is amazing so don’t worry about being left in abject agony!

It doesn’t always happen so don’t assume that it will. I had a really complex lower wisdom tooth removal, it was very impacted and the roots were twisted, had it removed under local anaesthesia as didn’t want a general and recovery was very straightforward. Yeah I had a swollen face for a few days and was on Cocodamol and antibiotics for a week but didn’t get any complications. Make sure you don’t brush the clots off as this is what often contributes to gettting dry socket, you need to keep it clean with salt water washes but don’t gargle or swish too hard as you want it to heal.

You won’t get dry socket if you don’t dislodge the clot that forms. Under no circumstances smoke or vape, suck anything through a straw or eat anything other than soft foods for 48 hours after the extraction. I’ve had two lower wisdom teeth removed and have not suffered dry socket on either occasion. As long as you take care of the blood clot you’ll be fine.

I did everything right and still got dry socket, sometimes there's underlying bacteria that destroys the blood clot. Especially if you've had an infection in the area recently

I had dry socket after having a bottom
molar removed. It’s painful, but manageable with painkillers. It’s not like labour pains or anything like that 😂

Use a decent mouthwash and when I went back to the dentist, she shoved the socket full of cloves and the pain instantly disappeared. It was amazing!

I’ve had 4 wisdom teeth removed. I followed the instructions, and all were fine.

I got dry socket too when my wisdom tooth got removed and while it was sore, it wasn't half as bad as the on-going pain my wisdom tooth caused me. And if you do get it, it'll be treated as an emergency and you can (or should be able to) get it seen to the same day. Mine got repacked and I got antibiotics and it was instant relief.

fruitj · 14/11/2025 09:51

I also got dry socket and ignored it for a bit as the pain wasn't as bad as I'd been led to believe 😆when it stopped being manageable with ibuprofen, I saw the dentist as a same-day emergency appt and the relief was pretty much instant.

I've had lots of lower jaw teeth removals including wisdom and never had a dry socket. Do not touch it even with your tongue. Ignore it don't brush around it. Pretend its not there for a few days.

Redwaterr · 14/11/2025 11:52

I had two lower wisdom teeth removed. I'm sure the clot fell out of mine because I had a big hole there for both but honestly, neither hurt very much so I'm confused if I did have dry socket or not as I've heard it's horrendously painful. I took paracetamol and ibuprofen continuously for 1 week and after that was fine.

Just don't let your mouth make a sucking motion, and when you swill your mouth with salt water tilt your head rather than how you would usually do it with mouthwash.
