To think middle-class guilt is performative - people still want nice kitchens?

The same people who talk about inequality still post their garden renovations online. AIBU to think most of it’s guilt-management dressed up as empathy?

But why can’t I do both? I’ve made a career out of reducing barriers for children in education - barriers far more commonly found in areas of deprivation. I regularly speak out on this inequality in work and socially. So does that mean I can’t also show people pictures of my new kitchen?

I think you are confusing a show of wealth with a show of fuelling the system eg paying a tutor to get your child through the 11+, becoming a landlord and hiking your rent just because you can, referring to yourself as ‘self made’ when your parents paid for you start your business.

It’s not about people with means being unable to enjoy or share what they’ve worked for. It’s more about the cultural tone that’s developed around it where visible guilt or constant humble bragging sometimes replaces actual reflection or action. From what you’ve said, you’re clearly living your values rather than performing them and that’s exactly the distinction I meant.

Put “Is middle class guilt performative” into Google and AI will give you a lengthy response.

Though it doesn’t mention kitchens 🤔

5128gap · 12/11/2025 19:07

The average middle class person isn't anywhere near wealthy enough to need to feel guilty. Redistribution of wealth doesn't mean Joanne and Nigel going to IKEA instead of Howdens. It means multi millionaires paying more tax.

Scottishskifun · 12/11/2025 19:11

What are you on about OP?

Didimum · 12/11/2025 19:13

Oh look, another ‘performative’ thread. Yawn.

Fedupofwimps · 12/11/2025 19:17

I am WC, I really hope I don't elicit any MC sympathy. Some weeks I even manage to put a swirl of honey in the kids gruel 🤣

I don’t think having money or enjoying what you’ve earned is the issue. I meant more how some people publicly overcompensate, perform their awareness, almost to signal that they’re ’the good kind’ of middle class. There’s a difference between quietly living your values and broadcasting guilt for social approval.

What?

Iamacatslave · 12/11/2025 19:20

Eh?

Exactly. Surely these bots should be focussing on scamming people out of their money rather than piss about on here, much more lucrative.

They’re learning human behaviour based on their interactions with us. God help us all. 😂

So any money I earn that I don’t ‘need’ I should give to the less fortunate?

Why? Why shouldn’t the government, the super wealthy and employers take responsibility for this shit show?

I don’t think the 20k I spent on my kitchen would make much of a dent for the millions in poverty. I pay my taxes, it’s not like I don’t contribute.

I’m not personally saying you should or shouldn’t.

I’m pointing out what I see as an odd disconnect between what you say matters to you and how you say you should act as a consequence.

I guess I’m curious what you are angry at. That others make the same choice you do? Or that others who don’t feel that anger aren’t compelled to do what you, who does, chooses not to?

Obviously £20k won’t end poverty. Neither would £20m or £20bn though, so those much richer than you are off the hook by that standard too. It’s still five years’ salary at world median levels, or one year at UK official poverty line levels.

Again, I’m not personally pointing the finger. I’m trying to understand your own combination of views, which strikes me as a bit odd and self-disempowering.

ApplebyArrows · 12/11/2025 19:38

Well, for every ten thousand they spend on their garden they might give another twenty grand to charity, for all you know.

Middle-class people are allowed to enjoy nice things whilst thinking other people should also have the opportunity.

But, on the other hand, of course there are a lot of people who post performatively about equality whilst doing very little to help achieve it in practice.

Only in the U.K. this non sense.

Chinsupmeloves · 12/11/2025 19:46

IME from student days it's been the privately educated and wealthy who shout the loudest about inequality and injustice. Not because of guilt, because they were morons who had no idea what they were talking about! Xx

GuiltMarbleHeron · 12/11/2025 18:37

I don’t think everyone with money feels guilty but some seem to express guilt publicly as a kind of social signal to show they’re aware of inequality or not ‘out of touch.’ It’s more about performance than genuine remorse.

Edited

Who exactly said what op?
