I use Monzo- it’s totally free!

drspouse · 11/11/2025 20:17

Kite by Starling - free cards, free replacement when the DCs lose them, you can turn it off when they are on a spending ban.

SixSeven · 11/11/2025 20:17

We waited until ours were 11 and got them a junior bank account with Halifax. They get a proper visa debit card but cannot go overdrawn.

Crazybigtoe · 11/11/2025 20:17

Have Monzo too. Works ok but some limitations.

DysmalRadius · 11/11/2025 20:18

We use HyperJar.

CarrierbagsAndPJs · 11/11/2025 20:18

If you have a natwest account, rooster is free.

cliffdiver · 11/11/2025 20:18

We bank with NatWest, so use Rooster.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 11/11/2025 20:18

How old is your child?

My DD has had a Halifax account with a debit card since she was about 12.

Completely free. I have the app and she does too so I can see what's been spending, transfer money etc.

She's nearly 17 now, but it's always been fine for her.

She will probably sort her own when she's 18

Nearly50omg · 11/11/2025 20:19

Just get a normal bank account!! Tsb, nationwide, Barclays etc all have them and they are free to use! Go Henry is a complete rip off

Formerdarkhorse · 11/11/2025 20:20

We use Monzo as well. Not sure how functionality compares to other apps, but my child has their own app on their phone and easy to manage from my account.

teathree · 11/11/2025 20:21

NatWest rooster for my 12dd. Free if you bank with NatWest!

edwinbear · 11/11/2025 20:23

Mine just have kids HSBC current accounts which are free. They have a debit card but can’t go overdrawn and they have the same app on their phones that I have.

SleeplessIntheOnyxNight · 11/11/2025 20:24

We use HyperJar its free and really easy to use and set controls for.

Mine had go henry and we loved the features. I had it set up that if they did one of the lessons they got £1. So my ds was doing lessons in investments, savings, etc. if he wanted to buy something he would do a few lessons, so he learnt to work to earn.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 11/11/2025 20:32

Hyperjar is very good

searchforthesun · 11/11/2025 20:33

Thank you all. It’s for a 9 year old so I went to set chores etc
I’ve just downloaded Rooster to have a look at.
Once he is 12 I will set him up a normal bank account.

We used Hyperjar but have since switched to Monzo. Both free. I prefer Monzo to Hyperjar because it's an actual bank account. When DC1 turned 16, it upgraded to a full bank account.
I think only I could top up Hyperjar, but with Monzo anyone can pay in if they have the right link. So grandparents can, for example. Also, I'm divorced and the link means XH can add to DC2's card directly, although it's me who has the app and set it up.

Nat6999 · 11/11/2025 21:27

My ds had a basic bank account for under 17's from Virgin which converted to a full current account when he turned 17. He had a debit card which he linked to Samsung pay so he could tap & pay with his smartwatch.

user1471464218 · 11/11/2025 21:32

Revolut although they were older than 9 when we started. I pay £3.99 per month for premium so I can have 2 kids' accounts and my husband has 1 child account which is free.
