To wonder why British people always sigh dramatically after a sip of tea?

It’s like clockwork - sip, then a big exhale like the weight of the world just lifted. Is it comfort? Habit? Performance? Genuinely curious, is this just a British thing or does everyone do it and I’ve just noticed it more here?

It’s a sigh of satisfaction and contentment as you drink deeply at the well of human happiness ❤️☕️🫖

YABVU.

No, don't carry on enjoying! They're insane these mad kettle flickers. I'm surprised their eyeballs aren't stained with tannin.

Mmm tannin… 😋☕️🫖

I thought it was written in the how to serve instructions on the box.

Pour boiled water on bag, wait, remove bag, add milk and sugar to taste. Sit down in comfy chair, taste first mouthful and sigh in appreciation of the magnificence of a well made cuppa.

Plus as others have said it's the law. If you don't sigh then the police will arrive at your door and you could be looking at a six month stretch of drinking the awful tea they serve in hot drink vending machines.

Honestly though it's because that first mouthful really does hit the 'ahhhhh' spot. As long as it's Yorkshire Tea that is!

I met the man who designed the graphics on that box, last Saturday!

I nearly genuflected.

Herbal tea and earl grey? That's two reasons right there of where you are going wrong. You need a proper cuppa and then you will understand.

Do they? I don't even drink tea, in fact no one in our house drinks tea.

And here we have the reason behind the decline in the world / it correlates with a decline in tea drinking

imagine if putin and trump drank proper tea

ThatCheekyEarlGrey · 10/11/2025 21:18

Because proper tea is theft? Classic.

🤣🙌

Monty27 · 11/11/2025 08:26

It's got to be a builder's cuppa. Proper in a mug.

Ah, well, wasn't Trump's mother English? And I believe Russians drink a lot of tea. Yes, I see what's happened in these cases. I understand now.

itsthetea · 11/11/2025 12:01

You blaming his mother? On mumsent ? Blaming the mother ?

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 11/11/2025 12:05

Didn't take long for an innocent thread about tea to turn political, did it?

Goodness me.

Justputsomeyoghurtonit · 11/11/2025 12:15

It's even better when the box is just opened. I drink decaf Yorkshire and the leaves are stronger from a new box.

To me, I sigh because it means I am finally still, standing or sitting doesn't matter. Just still and refreshing myself and giving myself energy and calm all at the same time.

dizzydizzydizzy · 10/11/2025 22:21

I know a woman in her 80s who sits down and stands up again if she makes 'old people
noises ' while getting out of a chair!

Omg I'm going to start doing that. Discipline for the years ahead! (I'm 47 and do it as every part of me aches already 😂)

Good LORD not decaf! Noooo 🙈🙈🙈

I know. Caffeine started giving me palpitations after I had DC 15yrs ago so I had to switch. I do use Yorkshire decaf and always two teabags steeped for ages so that my teeth hurt when I drink it 😂😂

Is it strong enough to trott a mousey on?

MajorMerrick · 11/11/2025 12:28

I’m British, I hate tea… there I’ve said it!

My family all do it though, even when I make it, I have zero idea what makes a good cup of tea, I just bung all the ingredients in together in tea bag, sugar, water, milk order. You’re all a bunch of weirdos!!

Giggorata · 11/11/2025 12:36

There is absolutely nothing like a cup of tea.
The ahhhhhh is indeed a sigh of contentment, relief and fulfilment.
I need hardly add that it should be loose leaf tea, made in a pot with boiling water, left to brew and then poured, milk and, if you must, sugar to taste.

The Brits even stop fighting battles to have their tea. After a tank crew were bombed on their tea break, tanks were designed with a boiling vessel inside. It maintains morale.
American film crews learned that British workers get very fretful without their tea breaks.

I'm going to put the kettle on now…

Forgot to add that both DS are addicts too and my Russian DIL is also a devotee from way back. But my Dutch DIL has been completely corrupted, away from the Dutch version of a cup of tea, pale and milky (shudder) to a decent brew. When I visit, the suitcase is rammed full of Yorkshire tea..

You are clearly not British or if you are, you're a TRAITOR! I suppose Putin doesn't allow his spies to drink tea? For him, tea is an instrument of poison, remember? Tell the boss we said hi!😂

What a strange household! Must be like a cult. 😂 "No member shall imbibe the leaf, lest they be thrown out to join the leaf-worshipping masses!"

UnhappyHobbit · 10/11/2025 20:11

It’s a ritual.
If we don’t, the tea God Tetleykhamun will not bless next years tea crop.

And then it's such a hassle to rig up the sacrificial giant wicker kettle, stuffed with virgin chocolate digestives, sugar and milk to undo the curse.

SoftBalletShoes · 11/11/2025 19:23

I think MN should ban members who dislike tea on the grounds that they are enemies of the nation, weirdos, spies, traitors, and probably all four. AIBU?

HeadNorth · 11/11/2025 19:29

When my DD was on placement in a care home she reported you could the residents, including those with dementia, to comply with just about anything if you promised them ‘a nice cup of tea’ afterwards. Any nurse/carers secret weapon.

Same here!

I do the above, plus the chair noise on sitting down too!
