Is this poor English and worth ‘reporting’?

On the size guide for women’s clothes in the New Look app (will try to post a pic in comments):

Womens Sizeguide
All measurements are based off of cm.

”Based off of”?! Who writes that? Now I come to think of it, there should be an apostrophe after womens. Although that doesn’t bother me as much for some reason

Should I let them know?

Size and guide are two separate words. Email them but it won’t change anything. Shocking

SheinIsShite · 10/11/2025 13:21

You could email them for sure as it's a clear error. But your email will probably be passed from department to department and get lost in the process.

SorcererGaheris · 10/11/2025 13:23

I think some businesses don't care if the grammar is incorrect in their signage.

I know I often see apostrophes where they shouldn't be (i.e. a menu listing their 'coffee's' and 'tea's'.

Calliopespa · 10/11/2025 13:25

If you have that much time... then yes, why not.

Personally this wouldn't come within a bull's roar of making the actioned part of my to-do list.

RedTagAlan · 10/11/2025 13:26

Maybe they used AI when developing their app ?

:-)

Wordsmithery · 10/11/2025 13:27

Complaining about every grammatical error you spot in shops etc could easily be a full time job. Is it really worth it to you? Apart from anything else your message is unlikely to change anything.

YANBU. That is horrible and if you point out "off of" (aargh! I even cringe when typing it) is wrong, it might just stick in the recipient's mind, so you will have lessened its use by at least one person. "Outside of" is another one I cannot bear. BTW, women is already a plural so, in the possessive, the apostrophe is before the "s", so women's.

More realistically, one person will read it, roll their eyes and delete it.

Yes, it's not perfect, but it's clear what it means so who cares.

Aha, yes of course! Can't believe I made that blooper...

I don't mind small local businesses making errors on their signs etc - I find it quite endearing actually! But a big company like this should have a proper QC process.

Worth a shot - you might get a voucher or something like that 😃

I agree with you about small businesses, and also foreign menus, etc - I love to see their errors in English. But a big British company should know better. They doubtless employ a proofreader for this stuff, but this error was missed.

diddl · 10/11/2025 14:03

What were they even trying to put?

I vote yes, tell them, as it is the thin edge of the wedge

They may not listen, may not understand what you are talking about, because standards of education have dropped so much for so many social groups, but the more people who speak up the better.

Think about what 1984 said about dumbed down/meaningless language!

DancingOctopus · 10/11/2025 14:08

A few years ago at a seasonal temporary ice rink they had signs up saying " First come, first serve".

SwedishEdith · 10/11/2025 14:10

I'd probably just post it on social media and tag them.

A voucher for money off of something.

GinAndJuice99 · 10/11/2025 14:29

It's junk Americanism. Written by a teenager probably. Hopefully the youth will grow out of talking like this, though it's more likely everybody will be in 50 years.

SpanThatWorld · 10/11/2025 14:50

I used to go to a cafe in Borough (long before the Market became all bougie) called Nicely Maid and it sold Samidges. And very tasty samidges they were too.

angelos02 · 10/11/2025 14:54

'off of'? Wtf? Although presenters on daytime tv seem to think it is normal!
