Child poorly, time off work

AIBU to say it is really hard being a single parent when a child is ill?
( father of DC only has supervised contact)
I had to take last week off ( 3 days) , unpaid parental leave.
Took my child to the doctors 3 days in ( it was a "tummy ache") urine infection diagnosed, 3 days of antibiotics, started Thursday. Saturday am tummy ache had gone, then returned in the evening.
Child is feeling still unwell. I'll drop another urine sample off this am.
I simply can't afford more unpaid time off.
I work 3 long days, so already am down %25 on my monthly salary.
I have zero family anywhere near.
I feel stressed and stuck and also nevermind not getting paid. My work will say I am now unreasonable to be off this long if I take anymore time off. ( due back at work tomorrow) Can't work from Home as I am client facing.

Yanbu. It is awful. You have my sympathies.
I used to take unpaid leave too. I swear I have PTSD from all the nursery and primary years of illness and worry. I have stayed with the same employer for over a decade as I can't risk changing to the unknown.

My house was always, and still is, fully stocked with half of Boots just in case.

Yes, it's an almost impossible situation. You have to take days off when your child is ill and there is no way around that; and I also found that when my DC was a toddler and at young primary age, I also got every illness he got, so I had to have days off for when I was feeling unwell too. I felt guilty even though I had done nothing wrong. I hope your employer is sympathetic.

Thank you! Just requested another doctors appointment for today. I am feeling so stressed. Really need to go to work tomorrow. Don't know what to do. And also worrying why it's not getting better. My child has only been to a GP about twice in her life, and not for about 6 years before last week!

Sadly we live in the middle of nowhere, nearest small city is an hour away in the wrong direction.
There just isn't anything like this year me. Also I work long days and am out of the house for 12 hours.
Will ask my childminder whether she could have child tomorrow but she has jobs in between before and after school.care she does.

If the father only has supervised contact and you have family elsewhere, why on earth don’t you move?

Birchtree1 · 10/11/2025 09:12

Where to 🤣
My family lives in a different country. I am.not allowed to take them there.
I have worked at my company for 5 years and on the whole they have been understanding. But there is a limit.
I can't just give that up as then I won't be able to support us.
Ther eis an occupation order and a non molestation order in place . Father hasn't seen them at all for 3 months at this point.
Can't magic up support!
