Fantastic and Superb Roast… Really?!

Also it costs £31.

Main things that are wrong with it -

peas have no place on a roast.
Yorkshire fits very neatly on plate meaning it’s obviously tiny.
There is one measly potato and I think it’s cooked the way a lot of places try and get away with now- ie not roasted at all but a big boiled potato lobbed in a fryer.
The meat sounds nice but sounds like you run the risk of having a big fatty bit what with it being sirloin.

Again, £31 😅

I think roasts in general in restaurants and pubs have really gone down the pan (pun intended 🤣) and the cost is eye watering. I can cook a decent one at home anyway but used to love a good roast in a pub on a lazy Sunday afternoon with a decent red and no need to scrub the pits afterwards (pipe dream post kids anyway)

I used to work in a pub kitchen in my teens and it was done properly then- HUGE cauldron of gravy bubbling away, melt in the mouth beef or pork with a proper cracking, and potatoes roasted in huge vats of bubbling dripping. Whatever veg was seasonal and Yorkshire puddings the size of your face. No one seems to do it like this anymore!

Pic from Tripadvisor so seems this is definitely how it’s served. I wouldn’t be impressed.

How can a roast dinner have only one potato?? That’s outrageous!

It’s not just one potato though, is it? The Sunday Roast comes with BOTTOMLESS roast vegetables (potatoes, squash, glazed carrots and minted peas) and gravy. You can have as many potatoes as you want.

Peas are the second best vegetable. I will agree with you that minted peas are an abomination and have no place on a Sunday roast, or any meal, for that matter.

That is a lot of horseradish!

I initially thought it was a coleslaw of some kind.

Same - I was wondering why the OP was complaining about peas not going with a roast when there was shit ton of coleslaw there 😆

The menu doesn't say the peas and carrots are bottomless.

Seems like you have to actually ask for more though, you can’t just help yourself, so on a busy Sunday lunch service this might be easier said than done. Just bring enough out in the first place, the cost of the meal more than covers generous veg portion.

I almost never go out for a roast dinner because they're just not as nice as I make at home and often ridiculously overpriced. I think it's worth the washing up to have a delicious dinner and lots of leftovers 😋

BeepBoopBop · 09/11/2025 14:47

I’d say that wine was wasted on it.

£31?

I can't stand peas.

It looks unappetising to be honest, I wouldn't be going to eat there based on this advert.

£31?
I hate peas. 😂
Very similar to my husband's reaction!

It looks like a mediocre crap, anyway.

HelloCharming · 09/11/2025 14:50

I’m struggling to remember last time I had a decent pub roast….it was probably 5 years ago in a random pub in Alnwick that a group of us had stumbled into as it was the only place that could fit us, and the dogs, in after a walk that had taken longer than expected. It had well dodgy carpets, rickety tables and definitely no farrow and ball makeovers.

my god it was just like the OP described in days of old, happily did a bit of everything instead of just one meat, Yorkshire pudding that were home made and the size of your head. Proper roasties. And surprisingly had an excellent veggie option and gluten free options.

TattooStan · 09/11/2025 14:54

That looks like the shittest roast ever!

DarkEyedSailor · 09/11/2025 14:58

The beef is how I would want mine, but the rest looks cold and lonely. (Actually I would want more beef than that.)

Why are the peas all over the place? Get them under control.

GehenSieweiter · 09/11/2025 14:59

Meat is too raw for me, one huge roast potato is odd, too many dry looking peas, where are the parsnips, cauliflower, etc?

mondaytosunday · 09/11/2025 15:00

The horse radish is the same size as the potato! The proportions look off. Though I do like peas, I usually have carrots and broccoli or beans with a roast.
I don’t think I’ve ever had a good roast at a restaurant.

TheFinePrintess · 09/11/2025 15:01

Looks like a dollop of fucking coleslaw on it….

The wine looks like Chateau Palmer which would cost 100s of £

TattooStan · 09/11/2025 15:06

One of the "best" pub roasts I've had in recent years (and I find most of them bitterly disappointing) was actually only a 7/10 on food quality, but SO generous. There were slabs of roast beef, a massive cauliflower cheese served in a separate dish, a massive jug of gravy, lots of side veg, real roast potatoes, and it was about £12.
The generous portion sizes made it feel more like decent home cooking. I hate fancy roasts.

Sidebeforeself · 09/11/2025 15:08

Slightly off topic but theres a pub near us that does bottomless puddings…think it’s called “Just Say when’ on the menu ..so things like as much jam role polly as you want. It’s heaven.

Waitingfordoggo · 09/11/2025 15:18

I had the best pub roast I’ve had for a long time recently in a pub in East Sussex near Heathfield (The Runt In Tun for anyone who is over that way). Overall the pub menu was standard stuff- not gastropub- so Scampi; Ham, Egg and Chips; Pies etc- nothing fancy. I can’t remember how much the roast was, but somewhere between £15 and £18 I think. It was truly fantastic. Lovely selection of veg perfectly cooked, excellent spuds, the meat was good, huge perfect Yorkie. And my favourite thing: a jug of extra gravy was brought with the dinner without having to ask for it. It was wonderful.

It’s an absolute piss take to charge £31 for a roast.

NotsosunnyShropshire · 09/11/2025 17:20

Best I’ve ever had was a tiny pub in the Lake District. Just searched google maps to find it, as we only found it by chance after getting lost.

I live much further south so it’s unfortunately too far to go just for lunch.

Ah good suggestions though!

I’m going to give my shout out to the Black Boys in Winchester for mine, but I don’t know if they’re still as good as they were 4 years ago when I last went. It’s a smashing, quirky and unpretentious pub nonetheless!

Have added your suggestion to my trip advisor list for Winchester in a couple of months. 👍

Oh you won’t regret it! Little walk out of town but absolutely stunning to get to it along the river (bottom of town, it’s about ten min from the King Alfred statue) there’s no other pub like it!

Wykham Arms just out of the cathedral grounds is a lovely one too but gets busy.
