Hi. I was supposed to be moving into a new build in December, I clarified this again with them to make sure it would be December and was told if everything stayed on track with developers I would be contacted beginning of December to agree move in date and collect keys. Well I had a phone call last week to say I could collect keys this coming Wednesday. I asked why early and she said they have bought them now so they are ready. Then I received an email requesting part payment before I can have keys. I emailed back to ask to keep to original December move in, as I have to give 4 weeks notice to current association, and sort internet. Plus I don’t want be paying two rents, I had a call back to say no, if I don’t pay and collect keys next week they will give the house to someone else.any help.

Contact your local MP. This is outrageous.

Do you have anything in writing agreeing December?

Do you have any legal cover with your home insurance?

This doesn't sound right at all.

I would offer a part payment and explain the situation as to why you cant pay the full payment

Dont mess around with them, honestly, they have the power here x

When I had an overlap from housing association (orbit) to council I was allowed to apply for a discretionary payment to cover the giving notice/ new rent issue.

Did they email you originally citing when they expected you to move in?

Numberone76 · 09/11/2025 13:06

Yes I have an email from them when I contacted to clarify the move in would still be in December. It states in the email if everything stays on track with developers I will be contacted beginning of December to agree move in date and collect keys

As others have said, a discretionary housing payment from your council might cover the overlap.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 09/11/2025 13:09

Dont risk it, honestly. Youre right but do you want to be right without an affordable new build? Agree with pp re discretionary housing payment x

Do you claim UC towards the rent? In the old days when I worked in housing you could claim double housing benefit for up to 4 weeks for exactly this situation- social housing tenancies rarely provide 4 weeks notice. You'll have to move in to the new place and if you can't get double UC/can't pay the last month in the old place don't pay it and arrange a payment plan later. Don't whatever you do refuse to move in.
