confused about Festival of Remembrance?

TheHopefulBaker · 08/11/2025 20:50

Stupid questions incoming, please don't be mean! 😂

I always thought it was broadcast live? the tv guide says it doesn't even start on the bbc until 9pm but I am already seeing news items reporting that the royals have arrived and taken their seats and watched the performance? So I am now very confused. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Also - it seems there is no way at all to watch the Festival of Remembrance tonight without the BBC? I cancelled my tv license a few months ago as felt it was getting so expensive and I have been increasingly displeased with them this year (that could be a whole other thread tbh) so obviously now I cannot legally watch the bbc anymore. I was expecting that the festival might be broadcast on youtube by sky news or something (as I believe the service tomorrow will be?) but it seems not...so unless you pay for the bbc you can't watch the festival of remembrance? It doesn't seem right that the bbc should have exclusive rights to this, especially now.

As I said I know I'm probably being very stupid and asking obvious questions so please be kind.

Also let's try avoid derailing the thread with arguments over whether or not remembrance services should even happen/royal family debates/poppy politics etc...if we can 😊

You can’t legally watch it being broadcast on Sky or YouTube without a TV licence either. You need a licence for any live broadcasting.

Needmorelego · 08/11/2025 20:53

It's filmed live but not broadcast live as far as I know.
BBC pay for the rights to broadcast it in the UK on BBC then presumably iPlayer.
It will probably turn up on YouTube but it won't be an official broadcast.

GoogolB · 08/11/2025 20:55

Most live things are not completely live to give a little wiggle room in case of disaster.

But YABU to expect to watch live TV without a license. And this is not a national event in the way that tomorrow’s will be.

That can't be correct surely? How can the bbc control what I watch elsewhere from their channel? youtube has always been free for anyone with an internet connection and is mostly funded through advertising, apart from specific things that you pay for directly with them. How can the bbc stop me from using the internet? Does that mean I can't log on to sky news online and and read live news without a tv license?

Hardly anything is aired live on the bbc anymore for fear of political statements being made 😭

In this case, it'll be to protect the royals from unflattering moments

Not arsed about your lack of TV license, theres worse things in the world 🤷‍♀️

Quite correct. You can stream without a license but you cannot watch a TV channel without a license.

That's not what 'live' means in this context. For TV licensing purposes, 'live' means as it's broadcast, whether recorded or live.

SleepingisanArt · 08/11/2025 21:05

You can't watch anything live (BBC, ITV, Sky, YouTube) without a TV licence. You can watch highlights after the live broadcast so you can't watch the live Sky broadcast on YouTube of the actual Service of Remembrance tomorrow.

You can look at news channels but they won't show the whole service.

Mulledjuice · 08/11/2025 21:06

It's not the BBC that decides the rules for TV licensing - why are you angry at them?

Serpentstooth · 08/11/2025 21:06

You pay for your Internet connection. Want BBC, pay for it. Stop whining.

Er why? Other TV channels are self funded and the BBC isn't imparcial

Is youtube classed as a tv channel though? I always thought it was classed as an online streaming service, it's not tv?

Regardless, it just feels a bit totalitarian for them to say that we can't watch ANY live broadcasts anywhere, even by companies that have nothing to do with the bbc and are funded in other ways or things that we pay for separately, because you don't pay the bbc? Am I the only one that thinks that's crazy? What about people in other countries who watch live broadcasts on youtube and don't pay a tv license to the bbc because they don't live in Britain? this is mind boggling!

At the beginning, the op asks why the royals arrived ages ago but its only starting now, thats what I was responding to

DuckboardandTowel · 08/11/2025 21:09

You cannot watch anything as its broadcast or use the iplayer but you can watch other channels via catch up such as itv x, 4od, 5od etc. Just dont stream on there.
You can also watch netflix, prime but not if they have live events.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 08/11/2025 21:10

Any programming that is being shown across any channel (or streaming service) as ‘live’ requires a tv licence.

By live it doesn’t just mean a live event like a football match/concert, but you wouldn’t be able to stream the ‘watch channel 4 live’ if bake off is on, while it’s being broadcast without a tv licence. You can watch bake off after it’s finished on catch up an hour later or the next day.

WineBeforeWhine · 08/11/2025 21:11

Is William there?

Vaxtable · 08/11/2025 21:11

From the gov.uk site

You need a TV Licence if you:

  • watch or record live TV on any channel or service
  • use BBC iPlayer

You do not need a TV Licence to watch:

  • streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus
  • on-demand TV through services like All 4 and Amazon Prime Video
  • videos on websites like YouTube
  • videos or DVDs
edited to add live tv is tv as it happens, so all scheduled programmes

@DuckboardandTowel but I pay netflix in order to watch netflix! what has that got to do with the bbc??

Also @Mulledjuice - who makes the rules then if not the bbc?...see I said I was uneducated about this. I obviously need to do my research.

Just watch it op, no one is going to crash through your window to arrest you

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 08/11/2025 21:14

Yes, you are conflating Tv licensing as being the same as the BBC.

Think of it a bit like the Royal Mail and the post office have parted ways, but have remaining strong links. It doesn’t make them one and the same.

Netflix for streaming is fine, but they do occasionally have live sporting/entertainment that they broadcast, which do require a tv license.

DuckboardandTowel · 08/11/2025 21:14

You need to take the bbc out of your reasoning, I dont understand it either but the rules are the rules.
Realistically who would know if you watch a live even on netflix but the rule in this country is that if you dont have a tv licence you cannot stream anything that is live.

I think you do need to educate yourself on the terms and conditions of not needing a licence just so you dont drop yourself in it if they come knocking. They won't entertain an argument about the bbc with you.

Needmorelego · 08/11/2025 21:16

Broadcast "live" doesn't mean actual live.
If a programme is scheduled for a time slot of 8-9pm and you watch it then you are watching it "live".
If you watch it on catch-up 3 days later then it's not live.
If it's iPlayer then you need the license because that's part of the BBC.
Nothing on Netflix is broadcast "live".
You watch it when you want.

Okiedokie123 · 08/11/2025 21:17

The festival of remembrance has only ever been available on the BBC so that’s not a new thing.
All BBC TV output and all live tv on any channel you need a license for. I havent had one for years. Occasionally I miss it (I’d like to be able to watch the F of R for example and the parade tomorrow) but most of the time I’m not fussed. You tube, itvx, 4od my5 keep my happy.

Ratafia · 08/11/2025 21:26

The BBC put a lot of funding into this. You might like to think about that when you're slagging them off.

If you think this is something that should be free for everyone, try turning up at the Albert Hall next year and demanding to be let in for free.
