Was nipping in M&S foodhall this evening and outside the shop there was a woman asleep in her car. I noticed her because she wasn't sat up, with her eyes closed, like when you just rest your eyes. She was slumped to the side. Not even with her head against the window but way down on the plastic part of the door. I showed DH and he sort of laughed and said she must be knackered.

Went in M&S, grabbed a few bits and waited for my C&C order, so we were in there a good 20 mins.

Came out and woman is still in exactly the same position so I go closer and see there are 2 kids in the back seat, both in carseats
One about 4 and the other about 2.

DH has walked ahead and is already out of reasonable shouting distance. I just knocked on her window and she jumped awake
I must have scared the shit out of her.

I felt pretty stupid and apologised to her and have felt quite embarrassed thinking about it since. She really looked passed out and inve I saw the kids all sorts went through my head.

Good for you. I would have done this too. I would rather annoy someone for 30 seconds than find out they had a heart attack and could have been saved if someone had bothered to check if they were ok. I wouldnt mind if someone knocked on my window to check i was alive.

There was a woman like this in the school car park late one afternoon. A other mum was about to knock and I stopped her. I’ve been in the situation, you are knackered, your kids are in swimming so you want a quick nap to recharge before you have to face dinner and bedtime. I’d have been furious to be woken.

Sure, someone might have had a medical incident but the odds are far more likely they are just having a nap.

Not with the kids in the car surely?

You did the right thing OP.
I’m sorry but nobody should be sleeping in a car with small children unsupervised.

People are very quick here to complain about elderly people being unsafe on the road but surely someone who can’t stay awake behind the wheel is a far greater danger.

Definitely the right thing to do. I had a stroke at the age of 29 and passed out in my car in my work underground car park. I was planning on heading into town for lunch. If someone had noticed and tried to wake me, the consequences may not have been so serious. Time is of the essence with these kinds of serous events (stroke, heart attack, diabetic coma…). As it was I was unconscious for hours.

The kids were in the car though? Who deliberately parks up to have a sleep in a car park with their kids strapped in the car seats?
