Thoughts on Master bedroom decor?!

DameRed · 07/11/2025 23:24

Can I please get your thoughts on my new bedroom décor? I will be downsizing and will finally have some spare cash to redecorate.
I have typically stuck to very neutral tones, so this will be a significant change.

The majority of the new items will be the soft furnishings, lamp and dressing table chair.

AIBU - OTT
YANBU - Warm / Understated

Not my cup of tea, it’s a bit old fashioned.

Mmmkaay · 07/11/2025 23:28

Love the colours you've chosen for the soft furnishings and headboard, it's all very cosy and sumptuous - but you need to carry this through to the furniture so white won't work. You need proper wood. Preferably mid-toned, think cognac/ oak. Also ditch the red chair as it's too much contrast.

What this person says! The white furniture and the black furniture don’t match. A nice dark wood would be nice

Thank you, I was concerned about the bedside table because it is brilliant white. The desk I can live with as it is more of antique white. I will be on the look out for a complementary dark bedside table!

We have dark cherrywood furniture and cream walls. Our curtains and bedding are deep coloured plush/ velvet. I think I'd want to strip and stain the whites to a dark colour if it were my room.

DiscoBob · 08/11/2025 10:34

The white furniture doesn't match. You need something in a warmer tone.

InterestedDad37 · 08/11/2025 10:37

Apart from the lamp, it's a bit like a hotel room 🙂

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 08/11/2025 10:37

Yes the white makes it look cheap.

Go for sheets the same colour as your lampshade, and add some real wood furniture instead of the white, and maybe some brass handles to add some texture and light.

What fun to be renovating your whole room!

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 08/11/2025 10:39

Oh just saw you already own some of these items.

Would you consider painting them? Painted furniture can look fantastic.

zingally · 08/11/2025 11:57

You should do either all dark, or all white. Not a mix.

Not really my cup of tea though. It reminds me of my grandparents bedroom in the 80s. my grandma had a dressing table and mirror just like that.

The bedside table is painted solid wood, but I hate (diy) painted furniture. I think I could look into it being professionally spray painted locally.

My walls will be repainted white and my actual bedding will also be white (I will need to stay away from coloured bedding as I wash often, so they would fade quickly).

I will need to think about how to tastefully incorporate white.

Remove the white furniture and you've got a decent scheme.
The white furniture belongs in a totally different colour scheme.

Poppy123xyz · 08/11/2025 12:33

as someone above said, it feels a bit like a hotel room. Add some warmth with colour, my bedroom is full of it.

DameRed · 08/11/2025 13:37

Thanks for all the suggestions, is this a decent improvement and attempt at incorporating the antique white?
I could also update my actual bedding to cream rather than the white.
I don’t mind the hotel vibe at all, as long as it is warm and cosy.

White is too stark to complement neutrals imo.

Either cosy neutrals in a consistent palette throughout or whites and brights

Redpeach · 08/11/2025 14:06

Master is quite an out dated term

TwinklyNight · 09/11/2025 00:02

If you really like the antique white, would you consider doung all the wood in antique white? I really love some off white cream bedroom sets I've seen.

TwinklyNight · 09/11/2025 01:03

*doing.

WaryHiker · 09/11/2025 01:14

It was too difficult to answer either way. It's definitely not over the top! It's a little dull, if anything. But neither is it particularly warm. If you're going for earth tones, you're going to have to embrace it completely. Otherwise, it just looks like an eclectic mismatch. Even if you do want nothing but neutrals, I would add some splashes of colour in the form of teal, amber, or a rich jewel red. It's too bland at the moment.

I realise other opinions may vary! And it's certainly an improvement on the relentless grey of the past couple of decades.

DancingNotDrowning · 09/11/2025 03:29

Bed linen should always be white imo and doesn’t detract from the overall warm tones given the throw, head board and cushions.

you absolutely cannot mix dark wood and painted white wood if you want to be cohesive. Go for one or other. My strong preference would be dark wood if you want something warm and cosy
