Told off by my boss for joke to colleague - I feel mortified

We have quite a laid back culture in our office and everyone generally gets along really well.

My manager asked me in to a meeting room earlier and said someone had complained about a comment I made last week.

One of my colleagues was speaking about her WFH set up - and said she had a new chair which she was getting used to and had given her a sore bum. I joked along the lines of that we didn’t need to know what she got up to in the bedroom last night. Laughter from those present including her.

I am mortified I’ve upset her and told my boss I’m happy to apologise. I am not being given any warning etc.

Do you think I crossed the line given it’s usually a jokey atmosphere?

The only thing worse than Colin Hunt style colleagues is someone pretending to be a Colin Hunt style colleague.

I find it funny but as you’ve found out humour is subjective.
You didn’t specifically make reference to anal sex, and the offended individual was the one who stated talking about a sore bum. Apologise and move on.

I’m a proper office dinosaur from the time when office banter was mostly dodgy jokes and sexual references. Anal would have been going a bit far though. Note it and move on.

I think it’s funny and she’s being uptight

outerspacepotato · 07/11/2025 18:28

You don't sound mortified, you sound like you think it's ok to make sexual comments at work in front of your coworkers. You're trying hard to dismiss it and minimize it when you're risking your livelihood because you can't or won't control your big mouth in the workplace.

You're not there to have laughs. Get over yourself, you're not even funny. That bullshit went out in the last century.

Said colleague is (usually) neither religious or a prude, thankfully.

Edited

How do you know it was that person who complained?
Someone else may have felt uncomfortable just being there

You asked if you were being unreasonable and when told yes you've decided everyone is miserable and you're in the right? Grow up

Hesma · 07/11/2025 19:41

Completely inappropriate and unprofessional, think yourself lucky you didn’t get w written warning

Bigtreeesss · 07/11/2025 19:46

SusanC86 · 07/11/2025 18:02

I hear you, but we have had jokes like that before without issue. Every workplace is different of course.

How do you know other colleagues haven’t had similar warnings to you?

SusanC86 · 07/11/2025 18:12

Bloody hell, I’m glad I don’t work with some of
you lot! A right barrel of laughs

Why are you asking complete strangers for their opinions if you're just going to insult them when they tell you?

You're the one whose gob got you into trouble so one would think you might be a bit more humble and willing to listen in the circumstances. You don't sound remotely "mortified" or "happy to apologise".

Butchyrestingface · 07/11/2025 19:49

Am I the only person whose mind ran first to spanking rather than anal? Grin

toomuchfaff · 08/11/2025 11:32

A good way to live; dont use any scenario to crack a joke where another person is the butt of your joke. It never ever lands and makes people think your amazing and as funny as you think you are.

If you need to make someone the butt of your joke, dont make it. Its isnt funny.

Washingbasquait · 08/11/2025 11:35

Yes, it went too far and even in a laid back atmosphere, to the wrong person could even expose the company to a sexual harassment claim. They maybe created a rod for their own back by condoning a “laid back” environment but it’s an office - not the pub with your mates.

Hankunamatata · 08/11/2025 11:36

Yes I think it was a bit too far.

Just go and apologise.
