Worried sick , re home insurance

Posting here for traffic as no luck on property
So to cut a long story short , renewed home insurance July this year as premiums on previous we too high. We have since now got a pipe leaking through our kitchen ceiling so have contacted home insurance as it's becoming quite distressing. They have sent emergency people out who have tested the ceiling to see if it's safe to take down to find this leak.
Any way to cut a long story short have been contacted by insurance to say we didn't declare previous claim from last year !? We had asked advice about our porch as a neighbour noted the glass had slipped and looked like we had movement in the porch as there was cracking (only lived here 3 years ) so insurance sent a surveyor out and resulted in them saying no claim will be made as it's clearly an old issue and why would we want to claim ? ( We just wanted to know if it was something we were covered for as panicked out porch was going to fall down ) Now I'm worried sick they will cancel this policy and we are left with an ongoing leak. I have explained I genuinely didn't think that it was a claim as they hadn't actually done anything about it ? And said they weren't going to ? Advice please 🥺

I wouldn’t be using the electrics in the kitchen. I don’t want to worry you but the ceiling can only hold so much water. How bad is the drip? How often are you emptying bucket?

stillhiding1990 · 08/11/2025 08:35

The water the is dripping into the bucket is just the water that made it that far down, there may be a lot more water leaking internally that you don’t see and seeping into plaster softening it. That would be my worry and prompt me to get the plumber

I don't think I can afford an emergency plumber , we are hoping home serve will come back to us Monday , their engineer saw the situation when he came last monday I've already spent 340 to reseal the shower tray which was a wrong error on home serves end , despite me saying our plumber was adamant it wasn't the seal of the tray , I'm just at a loss with it all and just don't know where to turn anymore

It might be worth trying to up-skill yourself with some DIY skills. You can buy a sealant scraper, a tube of decent sealant and a sealant gun for less than £20.

Youtube is great for DIY stuff.

The sealant has all been done , and done professionally , they even have had cameras right under the shower tray and can't see what the issue is , I see the tray itself was bone dry , it's really affecting my mental health now , I just keep crying but I can't keep doing that as my children will worry , this has just about been the icing on the cake these past few weeks 😢

So it’s not the shower tray but there is still a leak. You need to call plumber surely. I would rather spend £400 on a plumber than £3000 on a new ceiling and bathroom floor

stillhiding1990 · 08/11/2025 09:47

What will you do if asbestos is found? You’re assuming there won’t be but I would also consider the possibility that there may be asbestos and plan for that as well

NutButterOnToast · 08/11/2025 09:48

Please turn the water off.

They should not have advised you to wait this long with an active leak. It could be damaging all sorts that you can't see.

stillhiding1990 · 08/11/2025 09:49

I am going to assume the leak isn’t that bad if you’re willing to wait. I assumed it would be an emergency if there is a bucket collecting water but I’ve asked a few times to try and gauge what volume of water we are talking but you have chosen not to elaborate so assuming it must be a tiny amount of water.

RuncibleSpoons · 08/11/2025 09:51

As others have said, a leaking pipe is not something usually covered by home insurance anyway. You need a plumber.

Get it sorted. It’s not worth stressing over. We had major plumbing calamities earlier this year, wrecked a ceiling, cost thousands.

It was only when a friend this week asked me about what happened I realised I could barely remember. At the time, it seemed a disaster. But in the great scheme of things, it doesn’t really matter.

FullOfMomsense · 08/11/2025 09:51

I wouldn't usually advise credit cards but if your ceiling comes down and insurance say they're not helping, or they need to sort the other issue first, then you'll be very stuck. You need a plumber to diagnose a problem, not just seal up a shower tray. It could be as simple as a perished washer connected to the toilet. You can't just wait forever

stillhiding1990 · 08/11/2025 09:54

Crying is not doing to help OP. Sorry to sound harsh but all
of your humming and hawing has made this situation worse than it needs to be. Why pay £340 for a fix that the professional advised would not rectify the leak? That money should have been used for further work to actually correct the leak. Just start calling emergency plumbers and it can be sorted this weekend. I know the feeling so please don’t think I am being unsympathetic, I’ve had major roof leaks a few years ago and cowboy builders as well so I totally get it. I cried too probably but I still had to carry on and get more roofers in to fix the issue.

DiscoBob · 08/11/2025 09:57

What kind of water is it? From the mains? Waste? I hope you can ask around neighbours for a recommendation for a plumber.

stillhiding1990 · 08/11/2025 09:57

oleaee explain why the plumber came to carry out this and then you sent him away knowing the issue hasn’t been fixed? Surely he would say it’s not the shower tray but then go on to tell you what the issue actually is?

Upsidedownroundandround · 08/11/2025 13:31

He also didn't know he said try that and let him know when I told him it started leaking again he said the next thing would be to go through the ceiling , I just went by what homeserve said I'm not a plumber so I put my trust in these people
