I could have been rich! Biggest financial mistakes

And how you come to terms with them?

I turned down a really well paid role for something else that didn't turn out as planned, and could only find much lower paying roles afterwards. When I work out what that decision cost me over the course of my career, we're talking hundreds of thousands!

I don't understand this one. The numbers seem completely different?

Yes - that’s the joke 😂

My analyst now leads a very different life!

We’re still friends on FB and his last update he was on his massive yacht off the coast of Turkey for the summer.

A few years ago he did invite us to his wedding. The most lavish thing I’ve ever been to, taking over an entire 5 star hotel in central London for the weekend.

He’s obviously cashed some in over the years to buy the boat and pay for the wedding!

I doubt the return would be quite that much (or that he made £2.3bn on an investment.)

I mean the biggest financial mistakes are having children.

Anyway, whatever has happened is in the past. Learn from it, forget it, carry on.

Until you get old!

Because I was a young single Mum with absolutely no savings and had a shared ownership house which I couldn’t use as collateral. Where would I have got the 50% from?

Did you approach any other investors?

This was 2002, it wasn’t like it now where you can go online and find angel investors, attend pitch events and join accelerators. I think dragons den had just started but that wasn’t the right approach.
I don’t come from a background where I knew people who had money. I did try and get help from business link (a very old government agency set up to help SMEs), but again they were all about helping secure bank loans but only if you had capital or collateral for security. I remember hitting lots of brick walls and feeling quite hopeless.

I did try really hard but ultimately I didn’t have the right connections and in the end I had to focus on my day job and raising my kids!
