“Super”

I’ve noticed online and in person people have recently started using the word “super” all the flipping time when they mean “really” or “very”. Completely irrational but it is driving me insane - anyone else? 🙃

This isn't new.

I know it’s not new new - but I have just noticed that people recently are doing it all the time

I hear it quite a lot, maybe it's just that thing of once something annoys you, you notice it more?

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 05/11/2025 18:36

Yep, it's super common.

Blankscreen · 05/11/2025 18:41

I hate it with a passion.
I think it's American phrasing that we have inherited.

Gottocopebymyself · 05/11/2025 18:41

Totally agree with you OP.

It's so affected and ridiculous . It always sound like a parody to me.

WhatWouldRoyKentSay · 05/11/2025 19:21

Oh no, I'm a super user! super busy, super fun, super yum ... ruh roh! 😁

It’s super interesting how language changes and evolves.

VivienneDelacroix · 05/11/2025 19:30

It was used as an adverb in French before it was in English. I think it's just a normal evolution of language. I'm sure I was using "super" in French as an alternative to très or trop a very long time ago. It makes sense grammatically in both languages, if something is "super exciting" is superlatively exciting. Very exciting isn't quite the same.

MaryBeardsShoes · 05/11/2025 19:38

It’s super last year.

Laiste · 05/11/2025 19:43

It's super insufferable.

Along with the bloody stupid 'myself' instead of simply me or i 🙄

xanthomelana · 05/11/2025 19:44

I only ever see it on here. No one I know irl uses it on social media or in conversation. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

SwordToFlamethrower · 05/11/2025 19:45

Even in America, this overuse of the word has gone out of fashion...

I'm wondering if this is a verbal tic you have? Have you gotten fixated on words before?
