To say I love a steady paycheque?

Maybe it’s not glamorous to admit but honestly? I love having a steady, predictable paycheque.

All this talk about entrepreneurship, hustle culture and “breaking free from the 9-5” just doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t want the stress of wondering if I’ll make enough each month or constantly chasing gigs. There’s something deeply satisfying about knowing exactly when and how much you’re getting paid, and being able to plan your life without chaos.

AIBU to think there’s nothing wrong with valuing financial stability over chasing some dream of being your own boss? Or am I just boring and playing it too safe?

I suspect you are no different to the majority of the population.

I really hate the hustling for money & work that goes hand in hand with self employment.

YANBU

No, it's how I feel. I grew up with parents who ran their own business which was successful but stressful.

eurochick · 05/11/2025 17:07

YANBU. I became self-employed a few years ago after 20+ years of working for The Man. I love everything about it apart from the financial instability. After so long knowing how much would be landing in my bank account on the 25th of each month I do find it hard. My area is particularly erratic so one month I will earn nothing, the next month a few hundred and the next month 50% of what I used to get paid in a year will land in my bank account. It has made me very uncomfortable about spending money as I don’t know when the next chunk will land.

I mean isn't that the norm for most people? I think I know two self employed people, everyone else is salaried and on monthly pay.

AgnesX · 05/11/2025 17:12

I'm very risk averse. I don't envy the self employed at all. I realise that there are a lot of plus points but each to their own.

IwishIhadcheese · 05/11/2025 17:15

Dh is self employed. He can only do that because I have a steady regular income.

NotForTheMoneyandNotForTheApplause · 05/11/2025 17:42

Are you in the UK? Dont the vast majority have an employed job?

Seems like a strange thing to think might be unreasonable

HairyToity · 05/11/2025 17:45

I had five years self employed, and was very grateful when I made the return to a steady pay cheque. I've since never walked out on a job without another lined up.

Tupperwarefan · 05/11/2025 18:09

I have been self employed for twenty years and at 50, Im done with it. I do appreciate the flexibility but my husband is also self employed and I am so fed up of the hustling for work. I would like a job but am no having any luck in finding one

phantomofthepopera · 05/11/2025 19:06

I ran a business for years. 90% of my work was finding work. 80 hour weeks, not making enough to take a wage for months on end, having to pay the PAYE bill on credit cards, and not being able to walk away because 80 people’s mortgages were riding on you keeping going.

Everyone thinks as a business owner, you’re rolling in cash. I had the shittest car out of all my staff, and spent years fighting the wolf from the door. Eventually it all came good, so I sold up as soon as I had the chance. Never again!
