Not using soap to wash hands

hydrangeadangerea · 05/11/2025 07:41

In a nutshell it’s comes to light that my DH doesn’t use soap to wash hands unless he is visibly dirty. So after wiping his bottom, his logic is, he doesn’t make contact with his bum himself so it’s fine to just rinse with some cold water.
This is a massive, unforgivable ick to me and I don’t think I can over look it.
Im a HCP so hygiene is engrained in my every move!

There’s no point washing with just water. It’s not like rinsing off visible dirt after say, being in the garden. He may as well not bother.

My point exactly!

This is disgusting. He's not actually washing his hands, he's just barely rinsing them.

notaweddingdress · 05/11/2025 09:29

By this logic - why does he wash them at all? If something needs washing, it needs washing with soap.

HedwigEliza · 05/11/2025 09:30

That’s not washing them, just rinsing.

FreeTheOakTree · 05/11/2025 09:31

It isn't washing and he is revolting.

I cannot stand people who don't wash their hands after going to the toilet.

It is grim beyond words.

YodasHairyButt · 05/11/2025 09:35

He’s a dirty bugger.

Pinkcactushouse · 05/11/2025 09:35

I think most men think like this.

snoffle · 05/11/2025 09:36

So he's moistening whatever is on his hands, and rubbing it off on the hand towel - nice! Loads of people (men, especially) don't though. Wonder if they learn it in the soap-free environments of many schools. Revolting.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 05/11/2025 09:36

That's not washing that's wetting his hands.

Yuck!

childofthe607080s · 05/11/2025 09:37

get him to look at the science - it’s the soap that kills the bogies and poo particle turn up all over the place and even if you don’t poo washing your hands regularly reduces other germs getting around

it’s unscientific to not use soap multiple times a day

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 05/11/2025 10:05

The amount of women I see using public toilets and also using this method is 🤑 (including the Morrisons cafe employee😮)

bigboykitty · 05/11/2025 10:07

Does he then dry his shitty hands on a hand towel to share his germs with the whole family? He's disgusting, anyway.

hydrangeadangerea · 05/11/2025 11:17

Agreed. As someone who uses evidential practice in their every day job, handwashing being a huge part of it, I am absolutely livid. Genuinely might LTB.

Slightly off topic, but feels a good place to ask. Does anyone know of a hand soap (preferably liquid as I hate the texture of bars) that either moisturises hands too or at least doesn’t dry them out so much? I suffer terribly with dry hands, have done since I was a teenager, but lately I am needing to go for a wee every hour instead of 2 or 3 times a day - it means my hands are getting drier and drier from the soap every time. I get through so much hand cream it’s ridiculous.

Sorry to steering the post away from the original question, it just didn’t feel worth its own post and you guys might be able to help me!

Is he prepared to wash them properly going forward? I wouldn't be too upset about the past - no-one got sick (presumably)

gamerchick · 05/11/2025 11:56

Ecoli passes through several sheets of toilet paper. He will be getting shit on his hands.

I'm not sure what you can do but I wouldn't be letting those hands anywhere near my holy place. Hed have a choice to make.

MoreThanRubies · 05/11/2025 12:01

@Tillow4ever it’s a bar soap, sorry, but Johnson’s Baby Soap or supermarket equivalent baby soap (Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s) is the only thing I can use without my hands getting shredded in the winter. Cheap and found in the baby aisle.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 05/11/2025 12:03

Sheer grim bone-idleness.

NellieJean · 05/11/2025 12:03

Don’t let him cook anything.

coldiris · 05/11/2025 12:04

I agree with all those who don't consider it washing without soap. Using his logic, there is no need for a shower or washing anything properly if it isn't in contact with any actual dirt.

Thanks - I’ll see if there’s any liquid soap suggestions and if not I’ll try to overcome my issues with the texture.

Porridgespoon · 05/11/2025 12:06

Too much soap makes my hands very sore so I only do it when I feel it's really necessary.

I'm sure it's "revolting" but I and people around me don't seem to get ill any more than anyone else.

plumclafoutis · 05/11/2025 12:10

I wouldn’t let him in the kitchen or my bed as he will be transferring all those germs all round the house, on his phone, remote control, door handles and so on. Revolting.

SpanielLover2023 · 05/11/2025 12:11

Soap does not kill pathogens, it along with water and scrubbing mechanically removes them from your hands.
