Is this normal?

My eight-year-old son has growing pains in his lower legs. He's had growing pains at various times since he was about three. Both his dad and me can remember having growing pains, so we've always just given him Calpol, rubbed his legs, maybe done a hot water bottle for him. However, now I am wondering if we should have taken him to the GP and the fact that we both had these pains has made us complacent. Is it normal to have them once to twice a month for years? I can't recall havihg them quite so often. He is a very slim, petite build. Possibly the smallest in his year group of 60 kids. He has always been very small. He is also strong though, wiry, almost like a ballet dancer. He's very active too. Graceful. Any thoughts?! The pain goes quickly with Calpol.

It could be hyper mobility

Definitely get it checked out sooner rather than later, it doesn’t sound like normal growing pains.

My sister had this all of her childhood. As an adult she has been diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

DD has chronic pain in her legs, behind her knees, and has joint hypermobility. Hers is due to hyperextending

Normal for us - all 3 of my kids have had to them over the years. DD age 3 currently going through a phase of waking up in the night crying for a leg rub.

DS1 had physio for it - recommended standing on a slope thing which my dad made for us instead of buying one. Seemed to help! We’re slightly on the bendy side as a family, DS2 seems rather hypermobile so it’s probably something to do with that is my thinking.

Stretching, massaging and magnesium spray seems to be what helps for us!

My eldest was like this, it lasted for years and still have the odd occurrence now. He is the bendiest person I know, I mean like those creepy horror film creatures that bend into weird positions and crawl, he can do that shit, it’s terrifying haha I assume he has hypermobility. My middle child has a diagnosis of hypermobility and also has muscular dystrophy (lots of pains for her too) so I assume my eldest is also hypermobile.

One thing that has seemed to help my eldest with his pains is discovering he has several severe deficiencies (vitamin D, iron, B12, folic acid) so maybe get your ds a blood test to check his levels.
