To think an overnight stay in hospital after childbirth is standard?

I had a planned c-section at 1pm, was walking around by 9pm, and discharged the following day at 5pm.

Friend thinks this is unusually quick, even for a straightforward birth.

YABU it’s weirdly fast
YANBU it’s pretty normal

I was gagging to get out by this stage after both my c sections.

The post partum ward is akin to hell and not somewhere I'd want to spend a second longer than needed

I was in for about 30 hours each time but I wanted to go home a good 10 hours before this, they just couldn't find the staff to discharge us

This! I had c section at 3am and was ready to go at 1pm, but the pharmacy didn’t give me the meds until nearly 8pm so they couldn’t let me go.

I was dying to leave and was basically at the point of just walking out. Why anyone wants to extend the stay is beyond me.

MYOB12 · 03/11/2025 16:30

For my first 2 I was out in 3 days. For my third I was out the following day too.

surprisebaby12 · 03/11/2025 16:32

That seems quick to me, but I know it’s more standard in the nhs/ uk. In other countries, mothers are cared for for longer

Gosh 3 days!! How long ago was this? And were they c sections or vaginal births?

Whereismyfleeceblanket · 03/11/2025 16:34

I had a week's stay with my first as I had an unexplained rash. Subsequent dc depended on the time my consultant could come see me /dc... Occasionally a 6 hour discharge..
My very young dd recently gave birth at a local hospital..
No birth plan as her mw was on holiday...
Gave birth at 7.45pm. I paid the carpark charge at 10.55pm.

Whilst holding a car seat.
An occupied car seat.
One of the most terrifying nights of my life tbh.

BiffandChip2 · 03/11/2025 16:35

My third was born at 4am, I refused to stay in the next night (although technically the same day), so I was home by 8pm. I wasn't staying on that postnatal hell ward! 😅

greglet · 03/11/2025 16:40

DS was born by c-section just after midnight on the Monday, and I went him at 7pm on the Tuesday. They’d have discharged me on the Monday night if I’d pushed for it, but I was quite keen to stay for a full night - not sure why, I think it must have been a combination of hormones and adrenaline 😬

cottonwoolie · 03/11/2025 16:41

It's normal now but people who has babies years ago would have generally stayed in longer.

cottonwoolie · 03/11/2025 16:44

You used to stay in hospital for a couple of days after a C section until Covid kicked off.

I had a CS before covid & was out the next day.

SendhelpToddlerBoy566 · 03/11/2025 17:05

I had a c section abroad. They insist on a 3 night stay, I managed to convince them to let me go after 2 nights as I had recovered well by then.

1 night would not have been enough, I could barely move.

Both were c sections, 25 and 23 years ago. Then a bit of a gap before I have the third, also a c section.

I see! Different times I suppose. I was in for 2 nights (less than 48 hrs) for my c section, emergency and it all went very wrong so was surprised to hear 3. This was (almost) 13 years ago. My second (11) was 1 night normal birth and third (9) I was less than 24 hours. But as many have said I really wanted to be home

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 03/11/2025 17:39

Mine were both born at around 3am. Baby 1 tore me to shreds so I was in for 4 days....baby 2 didn't and I was heading home for breakfast!

mondaytosunday · 03/11/2025 17:41

Well I couldn’t actually stand up for a few hours after my section. The next day I could get to the loo but was a bit brain fuzzy. Three nights in hospital then went home and had a string of visitors then went out to a restaurant the next day (5 days post op) feeling right as rain. This was early 2000s.
I think one night in hospital would be good to make sure no tearing stitches and the spinal has fully worn off.

ConflictofInterest · 03/11/2025 17:44

I got trapped in hospital for a week both times, absolute nightmare especially as I'd planned home births both times. Could not get them to let us out, there couldn't have been less of a rush. I'll have to be unconscious to end up in a hospital again. It is the worst place to be to recover from birth and bond with your baby.

Angel191 · 03/11/2025 17:44

I had a planned c-section for my only DC at 43 and was in hospital for less than 24 hours.

Brelim · 03/11/2025 17:47

I had the section at 2100, I was home by 1400 the next day. I was ready to go much earlier but had to wait for meds. I would have gone mad if I had to stay in any longer!!

MargaretThursday · 03/11/2025 17:52

I thought C-section was 1-2 nights, but I may be out of touch now.

Dd1, born at 7am, discharge about 3pm next day.
Dd2, born at 6pm, discharge about 6pm next day (under consultant care so couldn't have been quicker)
Ds born at 1am, discharge at 4am. I was in the hospital only just over 5 hours total.

readingismycardio · 03/11/2025 17:55

Not in the UK, but where I live standard is 3 days (unless there are issues)

WonderingWanda · 03/11/2025 17:59

Gave birth to my second at 9pm, was told I could leave at 11.30pm, they did say Inwould need to bring the baby back in the morning for a check up. I got out of bed but my legs felt like jelly and I was shattered so I asked to stay. They put me in a lovely quiet room on my own, not disturbed once. Had some tea and toast, someone checked the baby over in the morning and I was out by midday.

Same, I was in 2 days both times and it was hell, as soon as I was home I started to recover.

I was barely able to move 18 hours after my section. I really needed the 48 hours thank god 2-3 nights was standard where I lived. I don't think I would have made it to the car tbh.

it took me 20 minutes to walk to my car 2 days after my c section (a walk that was maybe 5 minutes normally). All my insides felt like they would fall out.

SeriouslyWhataMess · 03/11/2025 19:31

I had a C-section at 8am and was home by 5pm. After staying in for five days with the first one, it was a shock to go home so fast and tbh I wasn’t really ready.

cherish123 · 03/11/2025 19:34

It's quick for C-section but normal for vaginal delivery. With vaginal delivery, you are sometimes out the same day. The quicker you get home the better, I say.

Spareincoming · 03/11/2025 19:35

Both my last sections were first surgeries of
the day; I had one night in and was discharged at 2pm and 11am respectively.
Both times there was a staff and bed shortage.
