To wonder how on earth anyone copes without a tumble dryer?

Ours broke yesterday and I feel like I’ve lost a limb! Having to wait an entire day or more for washing to dry (and having to put the heating on full blast 24/7 in order to facilitate this) is torture. I’m so used to washing uniform etc at night and being able to quickly chuck it in the tumble dryer in the AM whilst we get ready. Washing loads take proper pre planning now! Despite it being only DD and I at home we easily get through one full wash per day so the house is already absolutely covered in clothing drying on radiators etc.

The new one won’t be delivered for 2 weeks - unsure how I’ll survive in the meantime 🤣

Heated airer. Soooo much better.

They used to manage without washing machines , but I don’t fancy going back to a wash tub and mangle . Each to their own but I love my tumble dryer.

I love my low electricity bill 😁

Love my tumble dryer - it was one of my prerequisites when we bought, after a number of years renting an apartment that didn’t have one.

I always hated having clothes on display on random radiators or airers around the place. I was also a little paranoid using airers as one of my DB’s/Sil’s always use them/don’t tumble dry and I’m not sure if they overload it or don’t leave their clothes hanging up for long enough, but there’s often a mustiness I can smell which I couldn’t handle having to smell from any of my clothes.

All that said, in the summer months on those rare days of sunshine and blue skies, I do wish I had a washing line outside for bedsheets, towels etc. Sadly it wouldn’t be possible with my Asbo dogs at home! 😂

YANBU

I don’t find heated air dryers actually dry things - I do have one for the few things that can’t go in the dryer, but find I need to keep it on for about 3 days - so not sure how I’d manage to dry anything without my washer dryer (for those who say separate is the only way to go, we don’t all have the space and washer dryers are much better than they used to be).

Those with the heated airers how
are They drying your clothes? I’ve had mine on all day and washing still wet. It doesn’t get very warm and only the parts that make contact are dry.

It needs a cover. A large sheet would do.

birdglasspen · 01/11/2025 21:44

IKEA don’t do them now but I have two hanger dryers from them and now an Erika
from Amazon at the top of stairs. House is fairly warm so stuff is dry in
a day and a half if not before.
tumble dryer never seems to dry very well and way to wet and cold here to hang outside. And I have a rule never to hang more than once! When my DM is here she brings it in and hangs it around the house. Drives me mad.leave it where it is till it dries or bring it in after falling off the line soaked and dirty for another wash! 🤣

I never noticed a massive jump in my electricity bill when I got my dryer and it is constantly on.

Createausername1970 · 01/11/2025 21:44

I live in the south and I got one load dry on the line, and I have another load on an airer.

Generally speaking I put a load on before I go to bed and it goes on the airer in the morning. I only do small loads so they don't overload the airer. I put the next load on when I go to bed that night, and when I take that load to the airer the following morning, the previous lot is dry.

Three adults, generally a small load every day keeps me on top of it, but if I do get behind, especially with bedding and towels, then I do have a second airer if I need to do a bigger load, or a second load.

And edited to say I use a high spin - 1400. I find much less than this and the clothes do come out a lot wetter and I wouldn't want them hanging round my house.

worcesterpear · 01/11/2025 21:45

We don't have one and never have. It is a bit of a pain sometimes, especially when the weather is wet for days on end but not really cold enough to have the heating on, but it isn't that much of a hardship. When I've used a tumble drier on holiday for example, it seems to take ages and you can't fit that much in.

Lived for years without one until we got one when we moved to our new place and wouldn't be without it now. I can't believe we went so long without one!

It's a game changer, isn't it? Modern ones aren't that expensive to run. I just like having everything washed, dried, then put away quickly.

LochKatrine · 01/11/2025 21:47

I live in one of the wettest cities in the UK. We haven't had a dry day all week. I think perhaps some people live where it's drier and milder.

Definitely. I'll never go back to not having one now, it's an absolute essential for us.

ThatJollyGreySquid · 01/11/2025 21:48

I have never used one. I line or rack dry with a dehumidifier.

Purplebunnie · 01/11/2025 21:49

I hang clothes that can't go in the tumble dryer on coat hangers over the rail in the walk in shower, they dry very nicely in there

We have a tumble dryer but I try not to use it all the time. I had things on the line today it was quite breezy and took some of the moisture out

Same here. Everyone I know who runs a tumble dryer, has electric bills 3-4 times higher than mine. 😬

katepilar · 01/11/2025 21:52

Stop doing so much laundry, its ridiculous amount. One load a week is plenty for the two of you.

AcquadiP · 01/11/2025 21:53

Laundry dehumidifier with clothes on two airers, running overnight. In the morning, dry clothes and excess moisture gone from the room.

AnOldCynic · 01/11/2025 21:53

@Bumbles55 What are you washing at one load a day for two of you??

You’re joking right? As a single woman I generate three loads minimum - bedding is a load on its own, plus the clothes I wear in the week.

noworklifebalance · 01/11/2025 21:54

I find dryers very useful during Sprng and Autumn when it is not cold enough to have the heating on but the weather is damp.
I can’t be faffing around with taking the laundry out, then in, then finishing it off on airers etc - it needs to be a single step task: either it dries on the airer or it dries in the tumble dryer. Electricity bills do not seem to be noticeably affected.

katepilar · 01/11/2025 21:52

How on earth do you know how many loads a week is plenty for a household? It can depend on many things.

3 of us and one load a week is nowhere near enough for several reasons.

illsendansostotheworld · 01/11/2025 21:55

Sirzy · 01/11/2025 21:10

I can’t cope without ours. Trying to dry in the house makes too much damp for DS chest.

I hardly use it when weather is dry enough to dry outside but it’s a godsend in winter!

Same heren- it's redundant for at least half the year but wouldn't be without it in winter

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 01/11/2025 21:56

I would have agreed a dryer is essential until I recently moved house. I now have a line strung up in an undercover area which seems to always catch a breeze, and everything dries within a couple of hours regardless of the weather.

At my old place I could put stuff out in the sunshine all day and it wouldn't dry, there wasn't enough air moving around it.

Change your clothes less often? How can two people justify one wash a day??

This - no wonder global warming is an issue . . .
