To wonder how on earth anyone copes without a tumble dryer?

Ours broke yesterday and I feel like I’ve lost a limb! Having to wait an entire day or more for washing to dry (and having to put the heating on full blast 24/7 in order to facilitate this) is torture. I’m so used to washing uniform etc at night and being able to quickly chuck it in the tumble dryer in the AM whilst we get ready. Washing loads take proper pre planning now! Despite it being only DD and I at home we easily get through one full wash per day so the house is already absolutely covered in clothing drying on radiators etc.

The new one won’t be delivered for 2 weeks - unsure how I’ll survive in the meantime 🤣

Yanbu, don’t have one and it is a lot of hassle, plus im
sure actually costs us extra in trying to keep house warm/dry enough to help the laundry along.

I just use a clothes horse and hang tops on hangers on doorways, better to dry naturally

They are probably just not full loads?

towels one day, bedding the next, gym stuff, work clothes. Delicates, darks, whites?

I have never seen half loads of washing listed as an invitation of mental health. That is an awful things to say @Laurmolonlabe. You should be ashamed of that post.

JayJayj · 02/11/2025 20:26

I agree. But I guess you get used to it. People I know think the same about microwaves but I haven’t had one for years.

Laurmolonlabe · 02/11/2025 20:29

I'm sorry you have never heard of washing too much as a mental health issue- perhaps you should do a tiny bit of research before telling people they should be ashamed of themselves for putting forward an opinion backed by science, as well as common sense.

Half loads of washing? You are just trying to take cheap shots. It’s appalling.

people sling around mental health as if it’s an insult! Slightly outside your own routine - the person must have mental health problems?

I live alone and do about five washes a week. Do you think I have a mental health problem? Based solely on the amount of times a week I turn on the washing g machine?

I really don’t see how it’s so difficult for you to understand that we obviously live two very different lifestyles. The two of us do in fact have to wear two outfits per day. As I said upthread, I’m a HCP so my uniform absolutely needs washed after every wear for infection control purposes. We’re also not allowed to wear it to/from hospital so that’s another outfit each day. Usually I’m in the gym/on a dog walk so that too will get dirty and can’t be reworn. DD works on a farm so her uniform comes home covered in the unspeakable on the daily and she has to change for uni/gym/going out. We don’t rewear pyjamas as I don’t see the point of getting clean in the shower and then putting dirty ones on again.

My household linen most definitely doesn’t get washed weekly, not sure where you got that impression from. Bedding goes in the wash monthly. I’d love to be able to do it more often but don’t have the time.

Thanks for the delightful suggestion however it’s anything but an MH issue - just an active, busy, outdoorsy household🤣 I hate doing washing more than anybody but need’s must!

We have loads of washing every day because my son is disabled and incontinent.

My washer and dryer are on constantly.

I can recommend this facebook group for you : Washing Line Appreciation Society. It's great fun 😜

NewHome2026 · 02/11/2025 20:58

Mine has been broken for 6 weeks (4 separate call outs through domestic and general to no avail) and I have been wondering the same thing. I am SICK TO DEATH of the airer being out all the time, the crispy towels, the age it takes to dry in this weather even with the heating on and a dehumidifier running and hanging up individual pairs of pants to dry

FlipFlopVibe · 02/11/2025 20:58

We’ve had one for about 7 years but for the last year it’s been on its last legs, taking 8-9 hours to do a single load. Having a fantastic summer of weather it was a bit of a shock to go back to it last month so we got a new one. Good grief the relief!! Every time I open it after less than 2 hours and everything is bone dry, fluffy soft and smells delightful I give it a little pat and tell it I love it.
I can’t stand the wet dog smell of clothes hanging around all day. I agree with you OP once you have one there’s no going back.

ThatRareLimeFinch · 02/11/2025 21:31

i dont have a one anymore, id love to but DP isnt keen on them (hes convinced everything is going to shrink instantly) plus we dont actually have to room for one either.

everything goes outside on the line unless its raining then heating on for an hour in the evening just to finish it off.
2 adults, a teen and an 8 year old

What's an invitation of mental health?

seasid · 02/11/2025 21:38

now imagine being in a flat with no accessible room for a tumble dryer, nor no garden to hang it out. You just get on with it, though it’s just me (I’m a size 6 in clothing) and my tiny 5 year old son - so we have the room to put it on the rack. I can’t imagine having another adult, especially adult male - clothing definitely would not be able to fit on the racks or dry

Sorry - typo - indication of mental health.

that post has now been deleted. But I was making the point that switching on your washing machine once a day isn’t an indication of a mental health problem. OP has also commented on the now deleted post.

Edited

Thanks. Should have been able to work that out.

It’s not some sort of competition as to who can wash the least..! As for one pair of PJs per week 🤢

Lol no pyjamas owned in my house so thats one thing I don't need to wash .

Get a rail and hang clothes on hangers on it. Can fit more on that way

Daftypants · 02/11/2025 21:56

I hang dry outside as much as possible.
When I can’t do that , I use a wall mounted airer and a dehumidifier.
I do have a tumble dryer but only use when I absolutely have to , and only for some items .
So many of our clothes can’t be tumble dried, I check labels

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/11/2025 21:09

Change your clothes less often? How can two people justify one wash a day??

This!

Bumbles55 · 02/11/2025 22:03

SliceofTosst · 02/11/2025 21:58

This!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Two uniforms, both absolutely needing washed due to our lines of work. Daily activewear which obviously cannot be worn twice. Pyjamas. Casual clothing (DD is 21 and would rather be seen dead than repeat an outfit). Towels. Blankets etc need done very regularly as we have a large dog.

I could go on!

thecalmsea · 02/11/2025 22:13

Or try 3 kids, 2 foster kids, all at school with multiple PE days, sone playing rugby, some playing football, husband who mountain bikes, all weather golfers, people training for marathons and running in rain and snow. We are all encouraged to keep fit and make our kids healthier, regular washing and drying is a side effect im afraid.

BackBackAgain · 02/11/2025 22:28

Anytime my dryer has broken my parents have washed and dried towels for me. I can cope with just a washing machine for the rest of my laundry, and don't tumble dry certain things anyway. I personally feel like I really need a dryer for towels though.
