To wonder how on earth anyone copes without a tumble dryer?

Ours broke yesterday and I feel like I’ve lost a limb! Having to wait an entire day or more for washing to dry (and having to put the heating on full blast 24/7 in order to facilitate this) is torture. I’m so used to washing uniform etc at night and being able to quickly chuck it in the tumble dryer in the AM whilst we get ready. Washing loads take proper pre planning now! Despite it being only DD and I at home we easily get through one full wash per day so the house is already absolutely covered in clothing drying on radiators etc.

The new one won’t be delivered for 2 weeks - unsure how I’ll survive in the meantime 🤣

I think when people question how much washing others do, it’s usually out of concern for the environment rather than any sort of superiority- that’s a weird way to interpret it!

Yeah this. ^ I wear a top 2-5 times before washing it. I don't automatically just wash it after one use. That's batshit. I think a few posters on here (including @Bumbles55 the OP,) are getting massively defensive. They are taking peoples comments and suggestions as personal attacks. Very odd. 🤔If you're so secure in what you do, then why do you care what others think?

Also @Bumbles55 some people don't NEED a tumble dryer, as this thread has illustrated. (Even though you couldn't possibly imagine life without one.) 😱

I have a line full of washing outside right now. I put it out at 10am, and it's 60-70% dry. It's breezy, (12-13 mph breeze) and very sunny. Why on earth would I use a tumble dryer just because it's November, when I can dry the washing outside? Confused What a waste of money!

I can see this thread didn't go the way you wanted it to, but there's no need to get over-defensive and sarcastic with people, (or suggest they are 'wrong') just because they disagree with you, and do things differently.

I actually know a couple of people like you - both in their 30s - who dry EVERYTHING with the tumble dryer, and 'cannot fathom' why I use the washing line to dry stuff. They use it all year round, even when it's dry and hot and sunny for months on end in Spring and Summer. Then they start wailing that they 'don't understand' why they have a £2000 electric bill for the year, (compared to mine which is around £550 for the year.) Same sized property, same amount of people.

Try and tell them, and they INSIST that their tumble dryer 'hardly uses any electricity.' LOL, OK then. If you say so! 😆

This. ^ And towels that are NOT tumble dried are NOT scratchy and rough. I think @RealEagle and anyone who is experiencing this, need to invest in some better quality towels! Wink

Its a valid point. My towels aren't scratchy. They are from next so hardly super expensive

Tralalalama · 02/11/2025 13:17

Two people is one wash a day??? That’s nuts

i do one wash a day but we have 3 small children under 4 so lots of vomit and poo explosions

Not everyone has outside space. I don’t, so need a tumble dryer. Washing never seems to dry properly on an indoor airer, even a heated one with a cover.

Do you open your windows and let air in? I've lived in a flat with no balcony nor room for tumble dryer and used to put airer in bedroom during day and open windows gor air to come in

Yes, it doesn’t seem to make much difference though!

YABU. Family of 4 here. Have 2 airers and a dehumidifier in the spare room and that works for us.

snowgirl1 · 02/11/2025 13:26

Never had one. Dry clothes on the washing line - line dried sheets = my favourite smell. If the weather isn't suitable for line drying, I use an airer. Usually have 1 load of washing a day and it works fine for us [shrug]

We do this and also line dry in summer.

Anything urgent gets draped on the hot water cylinder.

We do have a washer/dryer but rarely use the drying function unless we've got lots of towels to dry for some reason.

Needlenardlenoo · 02/11/2025 13:38

Basically I prefer to use already existing heat than make my own.

Why is it nuts? Why is someone managing their laundry differently to how you do it nuts? I live alone and do at least five loads a week. This lady does two more. It’s honestly nothing to get excited about - I couldn’t even raise an eyebrow

i also (and brace yourself) run the dishwasher every other day. I know - I am wild🤣.

Good for you that you can wear a top 2-5 times before washing it. Twice is fair enough but to use your own saying, 5 is batshit and very extreme. Downright unhygienic. Some of us are unfortunately made differently and can’t get away with doing this - I’d quite literally be getting complaints from surrounding people if I rewore my tops, and rightly so.

I’m in a fortunate position that my electricity bill doesn’t bother me. We save in other ways - for example only heating certain rooms of the house (draughty 1930s semi, impossible to keep heat in and costs a fortune). Not sure why you seem to care, it’s not your money being spent!

Well my gym gear does smell! So that gets washed everyday. That’s 5x t shirts, 5x leggings a week. Then five shirts a week, because I sweat a lot and they don’t smell fresh. Five jumpers, three trousers, three sets of pyjamas and then all my underwear and that’s two loads a week, plus bedding and towels. I don’t think it’s bad to want to wear fresh clothes.

Well I’ve never washed that much. 1 towel. Bedding once a fortnight. 1 trousers. A couple of jumpers. One pj’s. Gym gear once or twice a week. Couple of T-shirts a week.
I never smell and in winter often don’t even wear deodorant (except excercise days) . Just find a shower every morning is enough. My clothes don’t smell unless worn multiple times - and even then that’s only the crotch of trousers. Don’t think I’ve ever had a bad smelling jumper! Usually it’s got something in it which is why it’s washed

Bellabomb · 02/11/2025 14:34

GreenSox · 02/11/2025 10:29

That’s what I was told would happen but it made them so creased that they wouldn’t even iron out.

Sounds like you might have overdried it. Cotton in particular shouldn't be fully dry when you take it out of the dryer (except for towels and any other stuff that wouldn't need ironing).
I do find that cotton bedding gets very creased if I put it in the dryer, probably because it doesn't have a lot of space to tumble. I much prefer to line dry it, then fold and put it in the airing cupboard. I'll only tumble dry it if it's urgent (eg if I have no spare clean bedding and need to put it back on the bed).

CharlotteCChapel · 02/11/2025 14:39

We have one but never use it due to.running costs. Drying is mainly done on the line, which is partially under cover, or in the house. It's amazing how much you can hang on doors and over the cannisters.

Wet clothes can damage wood, besides looking unsightly. Surely a big drying rack is preferable?

It’s not some sort of competition as to who can wash the least..! As for one pair of PJs per week 🤢

Have you considered that some people are naturally heavy sweaters instead of being blatantly condescending and ignorant? I bloody wish regular deodorant worked on me - instead of this my bank balance suffers every 6 months for underarm Botox.

Have you considered other people CAN wear tops more than once without BO issues

Nonameagain31 · 02/11/2025 14:49

I don’t have one, the hard time of year is when it’s not quite warm enough to dry clothes but not quite cold enough for the heating! This time of year it’s easy. I tend do about 4 washes a week.

I frequently wear a top or trousers, pyjamas, for more than two days and I don’t smell!

Again - different lifestyles.

i shower once a day - that’s two towels (hair, body). I use each towel twice before washing - so that’s a loads of towels washed every week. If I go swimming I wash the towels after one use.

Fresh clothes every day to go into the office. Then more casual clothes which last two wears in the evening.

underwear obviously washed after one use - PJs two or three nights.

bedding every week.

One pair of trousers could not last a week for me - I probably wear at least seven different pairs a week.

It’s typical MN! I wish my life was simple enough to get worked up about at how often people decide to put a wash on in their own home🤣

you're the one that started a thread about tumble dryers,...
