Because it's fun!!! 🎄🎁🎅

HansHolbein · 01/11/2025 19:20

Love Christmas 🎄

FasterthanBolt · 01/11/2025 19:21

Before lockdown I would have agreed but now I just think if it brings people joy, why not?

ChopstickNovice · 01/11/2025 19:22

I'm with you OP. I do love Christmas, but from Dec 1st!!!! Not Nov 1st!!

XenoBitch · 01/11/2025 19:23

YANBU I think even November is too early.

I went to the local designer outlet on Thursday and it was all decked out in xmas decs. Not even Halloween had passed yet.

Anditstartedagain · 01/11/2025 19:24

It’s a shop, they just want you to spend more.

Yes I completely agree. I won’t put my tree up until December but I’m planning on getting my twinkly fairy lights up. Apparently this can alleviate feeling glum because of the short days.

TheChosenTwo · 01/11/2025 19:25

Consumerism - the more time the stuff is out and on display the more people will buy.

youegg · 01/11/2025 19:31

Because Xmas is nothing other than a celebration of consumerism and they are keen to make you think ‘joy’ is dependent on buying as much shite as possible.

OP They’ve even managed to get people to weep at Xmas advertisements FFS while nudging you to buy more Chinese made crap.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 01/11/2025 19:31

I’m 62, when I was growing up Christmas (and all other occasions) were not as commercialised. It’s a different world now, sadly. They were more simple and better times in my opinion. I remember making paper chains, my parents erecting the ancient and rather bedraggled tree and adorning it with the equally ancient and threadbare decorations. It was so exciting! This didn’t ever happen until well into December because my mum said that this kept things special and I think she was right. My gifts were never extravagant and my memories are never about them but much more about spending time with my family playing games and maybe cracking the occasional nut.
All those people are gone now but I have my memories, beautiful, precious memories I treasure. The modern world has so much more but has lost so much.

Sourisblanche · 01/11/2025 19:32

Not before November 11th for me.

Exactly that is why people should stop being brainwashed by Christmas. Start thinking for yourself, just because ots something you've always done, dosent mean you have to carry on.

ShodAndShadySenators · 01/11/2025 19:36

I don't know about anyone else but when I changed my calendars over this morning I thought "That's Halloween out of the way, can think about Christmas!" For me, I find the autumn months and the thought of winter dragging on really depressing, so use events like Halloween and Christmas to help me get through it. It gives me something positive to focus on; rather than the dreariness and drabness of the winter I can enjoy how increased darkness makes fairy lights brighter and more colourful.

I'm not going to decorate my house for Christmas until December but before then, I can immerse myself in Christmas things which are bright and sparkly and glittery. It's not doing any harm. There's long been a mid-winter jamboree because we've known for millennia that a good knees-up in the middle of winter makes us more positive about spring on the way and gives us something to focus on.

Both Halloween and Christmas are still evolving. Modern Christmases are not like Victorian Christmases, the Halloweens I knew as a kid are mere shades of the ones now. People will look for ways to have more fun, it's the way it is.

LlamaNoDrama · 01/11/2025 19:38

I saw this said earlier this week so have been winding my family up all week saying the Christmas tree is going up today (it hasn't btw!).

Simplelifeneeded · 01/11/2025 19:39

For years I used to put my decoration up by 6th November I liked to have them up by the time it was my birthday. Now they go up Xmas eve and come down boxing day.
Ds is Autistic and the tree upsets him too much to have it up longer.

We have twinkly lights round our bookcases and left them up a couple of years ago. It's lovely and cosy in the winter and brings a bit of cheer.

Allswellthatendswelll · 01/11/2025 19:40

November should be Christmas free. Christmas starts when advent begins and that's just the waiting for Christmas!

Pebbles16 · 01/11/2025 19:41

I am firmly in the "keep Christmas in December" club but, retail has always gone early.
I worked at HMV in my first year at university (I am THAT old), and had to leave before the second Christmas because it did my head in so much. Switched to the Body Shop which then had its gift basket challenges - I'd like a 500ml something with a couple of 100mls and this odd shaped item please - at 4pm on Christmas Eve. GAH!

I'm 37 but remember my mum loving the paper chains too. We've started doing the same for our daughter. My wife's granny died in 2023 and we have some of her Christmas ornaments too. It's the heirlooms and traditions that bring the magic.

What is this obsession people have with what other people do with their lives that harms absolutely no one.

In the words of the great Moira Rose: ‘lest you suffer vertigo from the dizzying heights of your moral ground.’ 😉

WhereIsMyLight · 01/11/2025 19:43

Shops do it because of consumerism. They want to make more money. Same reason that Easter eggs will be in shops on 1st January.

People go along with it because it brings them joy. People are starting to notice the evenings getting darker, it’s colder, it’s wetter. It feels more miserable. Halloween passes and there isn’t another celebration and people want some joy so they focus on Christmas. Buying tat gives them a temporary dopamine hit. Planning things for the family gives people something to look forward to. People starting Christmas on 1st November has become more of a thing since Covid and I think it’s just because people are just looking for any tiny glimmer of joy.

OP is on about shops playing xmas music in November, not what people do in the privacy of your own home.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 01/11/2025 19:44

The quicker we can get Christmas out of the way, the quicker we can have Easter eggs!

Itsbritneyb1tch · 01/11/2025 19:45

Because Mariah Carey says so 🤣

i absolutely love the countdown to midnight on 31/10 and for November 1st to start! And love Mariah’s “defrosting” for Christmas videos she does every year on the 1st November.

it brings a lot of joy, so why not!

youalright · 01/11/2025 19:47

Because its a shop and a lot of people have started Christmas shopping to spread the cost. People who decorate their homes is a whole other kettle of fish
