To ask if Cocomelon is really that bad?

My two year old loves the songs, unfortunately.

I have got a card for her Yoto player as she loves it but wondering if I should just ban it altogether, as I keep seeing stuff about how harmful it is and addictive.

It's just annoying

PigletIsWorried · 01/11/2025 17:52

I expect the songs on a yoto player are fine. It's the tv show that's a problem from what I've seen because it's both overstimulating and mindless. I wouldn't think the songs have the same issue as the visual element.

MyRoRe · 01/11/2025 17:53

My nephew is now 5.5 and has grown out of it, but when 2-3 y.o. he used to love it. His mum would limit it to 15-20 min a day and he seemed fine with it.
My own 3.3 y.o. has shown no interest in cocomelon at all. So I can't really attest to it being addictive based only on 2 children. You could limit to two songs and watch and sing along?

Eenameenadeeka · 01/11/2025 17:54

I think a lot of the issue is the screen part- apparently it's purposely made to be overstimulating in a way that makes them unable to stop watching. I don't think the songs without the screen would be the same issue.

NaranjaDreams · 01/11/2025 17:55

It’s the show that’s the problem, because it’s overstimulating in a very deliberate way. It’s been designed to ignore the recommended number of frame changes for children of that age. It’s designed to be addictive.

The Yoto cards won’t have the same issue, but you might find that they keep the love for cocomelon alive, whereas if you went cold turkey on both, they’d forget a lot faster.

Thanks. I really wish she hadn’t got into it and I can’t quite remember how it happened - I think we were having a really tough day last summer and I put it on for her and she settled and - arghh. Of course, now I am getting told off by influencers I don’t even bloody follow for it!

i’d chill out about it.
my dc both loved if. They don’t watch it now they’re older and actually watch less tv probably than they used to.
i really don’t think you’re doing any long term harm!

Pollyanna87 · 01/11/2025 18:15

I’m sorry but it’s atrocious.

notgoingonabearhunt · 01/11/2025 18:39

It is but I suppose I’m asking is it harmful atrocious or complete gibberish but benign.

Both my children watched it when they were younger. They’re 11 and 8 now and their exposure to The bath song and finger family hasn’t left them any lasting damage.

starrynight009 · 01/11/2025 19:08

My DD really liked it when she was younger. She's 6.5 now and is a happy, sweet child. She's not all that bothered about screens but, when she does watch TV, it's more story based shows now. She still loves music and singing songs, which is maybe why she liked Cocomelon. We have no issues with her behaviour or attention.

I personally think it's all about moderation....with anything. Computer games are probably worse, thankfully she isn't interested in those yet.

Scottishskifun · 01/11/2025 19:10

Like everything it's in moderation and not all of it is bad DS2 learnt how to copy and twist spaghetti from a cocomelon episode and it was a god send foe potty training!

I think it's if spending hours then yea it's way too much

notgoingonabearhunt · 01/11/2025 19:13

Thanks. No, she definitely doesn’t have hours - I suspect you’re onto something with that @starrynight009 , she loves music so I think that’s why she likes it.
