Need a handhold - 20 week scan

Hi

I had a 20 week scan and we were told one thing then another thing but in the end, we know one of our baby's kidneys is looking really bad. It's not renal nephrosis, not renal dilation which can fix itself. It's a huge echogenic kidney. I've had another 3 scans since in a short space of time - no change.

Doctors can't answer any questions but will keep monitoring until I give birth. The other kidney is looking okay now but I am so worried about it going down the same route.

We don't know what to expect, we don't know what's going on, it's all just about waiting now. I don't think I can get through these coming months, I am really really scared. All the good stories I found online were about dilated kidneys (renal pelvis) which is irrelevant to our scenario.

I am too weak to cope with this 😞

To explain better, there was a point where they thought the findings on the scan were better than they actually were. That's when it was agreed not to do certain testing.

Take it as a huge positive that the doctors have said about monitoring until birth, it's a really good sign they've said that

My baby had RPD & it was so severe that the consultants ect from the get go said he wouldnt survive ( he didn't ) so honestly, the fact their telling you their gonna monitor until birth is fantastic sign that They have good faith baby will be okay

Good luck x

I'm so sorry this happened to you ❤️😔

Just worried that things will go really bad later on and doctors won't be able to determine severity of the outcome so won't allow TFMR after 23w6d and we'll have to see our child suffer and die prematurely.

Op you have the right to request an amniocentisis to rule out genetic conditions

Hankunamatata · 02/11/2025 15:51

You can have a termination at any point in preganacy if doctors decides the baby would not survive or have significant disabilities. There is no 24 week limit to this

At my 20 week scan dd was tiny. Under 1st% with short legs.

I was warned to expect the worst, that she might not make it. I was scanned constantly and had to stop work early, she was delivered by c section 6 weeks early and was very tiny. She was poorly a lot as a baby

She's now 6 & she's brilliant. Happy, healthy, does well in school. She is still physically very small but now has medication helping her grow.
