Ironically inspired by a tiktok video someone showed me about living like the 90s, I've really scaled back lots of the 'noise' of modern life and I'm liking it so far

Has anyone else done this? Or just want to chat about it. I mean, it's not rocket science, it's just having a simpler life but I'm interested in it
Here's what I've done so far

  1. Got my cd player out for the kitchen instead of listening through phone
  2. Got my DvDs out again
Started waking up to the radio on a timer, not a phone alarm.
  1. No reading news on phone, just put telly on if I want news
  2. Started a Christmas list, rather than just buying whatever I want. It's made me look forward to Christmas

I'd love to chat if anyone has done the Same sort of thing

I really would like to get rid of my phone. My brain is totally fried.

RaininSummer · 01/11/2025 12:56

I don't want to change my car unless I can get a cd player as can't be doing with this streaming and paying for music I own thing.

ScottChegg · 01/11/2025 12:58

I still do somethings like this, went back to some others and tried to go back to some others but failed.

I still have a paper calendar and diary/notebooks. Things just do not stick in my head in the same way unless I have physically written them down with my own hand.

I have gone back to listening to the radio after the Alexa dot in the kitchen died and I have no desire to replace it. Also gone back to writing the shopping list on the blackboard that is on the wall and/or paper.

I tried to go back to a nokia dumb phone a while back, but that ship has sailed for me. The kids wouldn't call and actually speak to me, because, who does that? 🙄And it was so slow to text compared to swype that the kids would message me again when I was halfway through composing a reply to see if I had read their first message. It got very frustrating. Also, I use it a lot to look up information. I could fire up the laptop if I had to but it was slower. The yellow pages and thompson local is now a thing of the past and I can't imagine having to go to the library now, every time I wanted to know something, and hoping they happen to have a book with the information in. 😆

No need for me to go back to DVDs or VHS because I have gone back to the days before tv and films were a thing and just don't watch them. That's just a personal thing as I have no interest in them.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 01/11/2025 12:59

I have two social media accounts... on here, and FB (but that is rarely used now, and I'd delete it if it wasn't for certain people that live very far away!).

I attend language classes in person, I have so many books that I probably own more than the local library, read paper books over Kindles, have a paper magazine subscription, write letters to my deaf grandparent (that way, we can communicate reliably!), and I avoid the news as much as possible (it's very depressing, otherwise!). I also try to use cash or store cards (rather than phone apps) when shopping... mainly because some are so far out of civilisation that signal is unreliable. My car is manual and has a CD player.

I don't have a landline, because it used to only get junk calls, and I spend more time at work than I do at home. It means that home is very quiet, and I don't get pestered.

It's also rather niche, but I don't have a TV, either. It regularly freaks people out!

Tortielady · 01/11/2025 13:39

I've settled into a hybrid. I'm not parting with my smartphone and the fact that we don't have a landline/phone in the bedroom means it goes to bed with me. I have health problems and can't be without a phone of some description, upstairs and down. (I'm not convinced it's wise or safe for anyone to do that tbh.) I like telephone banking, the NHS app, shopping, reading the news and social media and I'm a big user of Kindle, audiobooks and Spotify. But I love and value paper books and like using paper and ink. I'm writing my PhD up and have to do my amendments by hand before committing them to my laptop. I'm still attached to phone conversations, but they aren't necessarily better, especially if you need a paper trail. The way some big organisations are fading out contact by email in favour of the phone and chat services is bewildering and may not be in the best interests of customers/service users.

It's a complex picture. I agree that there is solid evidence that not having your phone attached to you 24/7 is better for your mental and physical health, but detaching ourselves might be easier said than done - and a lot more expensive, clunky and inconvenient.

ginasevern · 01/11/2025 13:53

I'm basically still in the 90's, with possibly a touch of the 70's thrown in. I do have a desktop, the one I'm typing on now and obviously the internet. I also have a mobile but only use it for work or emergencies. I haven't got any apps on my phone and I don't have Whatsapp. I just use the thing to make calls and occasionally text if I have to. I can't even imagine texting someone I live with (I've often read of parents texting their children upstairs in their bedrooms, or wives texting their DH in the garage for example - wtf!) I have a huge collection of DVD's so most of the films I watch are on those or sometimes I'll watch one on TV. I don't have Netflix. For music I listen to CDs or the radio. I love listening to the radio in the car. I catch the news either on TV or the radio. I don't shop online and I buy all my food and clothes in store. If I book a holiday I go to a travel agent. I read proper books - I don't have a Kindle. I still have a landline with an answer machine. I've never worn headphones and I would really hate to because I like to stay connected and be aware of what's going on around me.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 01/11/2025 18:03

I've still got my stacking hi-fi system, tape cassettes and, this is where the fun part was, a pencil that's fits into the tape cassette inorder to wind it back if needed...
IYKYK..

I do still have a landline but I'm thinking of getting rid of it as most of the calls I get on it are from dodgy scammers.
Yes to analogue clocks and having to remember to change them twice a year.

This! I don’t pick up any phone in the week as it is always scam. I love Sundays as I get a lot of calls on the landline. I just picked it up and got a really nasty man doing market research. I started politely and then as his tone became more arrogant I am afraid I told him to bugger off, he was probably a bot😂. I will keep the phone but am going to look at the caller number in future!

mrstreacle · 02/11/2025 15:05

We still use clocks that you have to change twice a year, CD's, DVD's, books, radios, refuse to use internet banking or pay by phone - far too difficult for me to get into the blooming things in the first place with little sight and what I have is blurred. We don't use Alexa or anything like that, abhor clouds, and have a wonderful life without having to worry about phones being lost/stolen/hacked

MrsWallers · 02/11/2025 16:37

I think I live a rather simple life but I'm not giving up my smart phone! Its so useful as it has so many functions. You dont need to be glued to it You can just ignore a lot of modren nonsnese like tik tok and influencers!

Why? What's the difference in putting on a dvd or watching the same film through netflix? What difference does it make listening to a cd or the same album through spotify? I get your list thing, but I honestly don't see the point in doing something old for old's sake when it's slower, poorer quality and takes more unnecessary faff. Seems like pretentious nonsense to be honest, like those hipster idiots on their typewriters in cafes.

grafittiartist · 02/11/2025 22:13

we still use alarm clocks (radio ones).
and a hi- fi system for music/ radio. CD’s and vinyl
also- still print out photos.

NotMeNoNo · 02/11/2025 22:24

I've gone back to my analogue wristwatch, just got fed up of fiddling with a Fitbit and don't care about my step count. We still use our hifi and listen to LPs from time to time but also play high quality streaming through it. I listen to the radio all the time but it is DAB. I do read novels on my kindle but like books with pictures like cookery books to be the real thing.

Oh and I still use my old mechanical sewing machines. And analogue alarm clock.

I write notes in a notebook for work, I'm a good typist but can't process information the same way as with handwriting.

StrongLikeMamma · 02/11/2025 22:44

I’d love a nokia!
i’d only miss vinted, WhatsApp and mumsnet 😆

GlomOfNit · 02/11/2025 23:27

I get laughed at by friends (my own age and younger) for: having a paper diary, watching tv as it's broadcast, listening to the radio in the kitchen and car, my main news source being tv or radio broadcasts, not owning a Kindle, still watching DVDs (and we do stilll have a video player plugged in!), not knowing how to broadcast music from my phone to my car stereo, not actually having my music on my phone ...

I don't have my phone by my bedside (bad habit!) so have never really got into the habit of using it as my alarm - I have an alarm clock, which I ignore. I buy cds (they're vital revenue for local and folk musicians) which I play in the car.

NormasArse · 02/11/2025 23:30

I bought myself a good turntable and I often sit and listen to records.

My diary is a planner on the kitchen wall.

The only time I watch films is at the local independent cinema.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 02/11/2025 23:31

We get a newspaper delivered now. Dh reads the news every day and had been on his phone. We thought it would be better example to the kids to see him reading a paper. We leave them around, sometimes open when they are having breakfast in the hope that they will mindlessly read something and actually educate themselves..so far they have learnt nothing but we keep trying

I tend to use paper a lot for making lists rather than a phone so we have lots of note books around. Our house is full of books too as I enjoy a physical book.

MatchaMatchaMatcha · 02/11/2025 23:39

Yes me :)

I've got an old fashioned alarm clock and started reading at night, which means I sleep better and the alarm clock wakes me up first time. Hasn't been the case since I moved to smartphones years ago.

I love the radio so I've used that for years and dab means there are stations dedicated to specific music decades / styles so I' stopped using music streamers. Last year got a new secondhand car and made sure I chose one with a cd player & proper buttons!

I still get my news from the Internet but I started thinking about reverting to watching broadcasts again like you've mentioned.

Apart from my phone, I now avoid all 'smart' technology and only watch TV when there's something on I'm interested in. The rest of time I listen to podcasts, the radio or read. Feel much more content as a result.

Have noticed the major stores seem to be selling analogue clocks again so there's definitely a resurgence.

Growlybear83 · 03/11/2025 00:14

I suppose some people on here would see me as a dinosaur as I’ve never stopped doing most of the things people have mentioned on this thread 😆. We’ve never got rid of our CDs, still watch DVDs and VHS tapes, still have a collection of about 500 vinyl albums and cassette tapes which we play on our hifi system. I’ve never streamed any music or radio and usually listen to live radio in the kitchen, bedroom, and car. We use the landline for almost all phone calls and usually ring people rather than text or use WhatsApp. We’ve got hundreds of books and it would never occur to me to buy a new book in a digital format. I’ve only ever sent an occasional digital birthday card when I’ve forgotten to buy and post a real card in time, I send Christmas cards in the post, and include handwritten letters with cards for overseas relatives. I do occasionally use my phone for directions when I’m driving but mostly rely on my A-Z, and we always buy maps if we’re driving abroad.

I never use my phone to pay for anything and always carry about £30 in cash for small purchases - I’ve even still got a chequebook, although it’s very rare that I actually write one nowadays.

I use a big A5 diary, and have never got rid of my alarm clock. I also print out our holiday photos and put them into albums. I’ve nothing against new technology and think it has its place in most people’s lives, but I can’t see any point in changing things just for the sake of it.

KimberleyClark · 03/11/2025 01:06

5foot5 · 01/11/2025 11:42

Yes, this.

Although technically we do still own CDs they are all sealed up in a box on the garage. DH ripped them all on to the laptop. Same with the vinyl we own. I got him a turntable that can play the records and record them to a memory stick at the same time. Trouble with using them directly is the space they take up.

I don't think we have any VHS still and if we did god knows where we would get a player. We still have quite a few DVDs but play them through an external CD/DVD player connected to the laptop which is then connected to the TV.

However I will never compromise on books. We have hundreds and yes they do take up space but that's just how it is meant to be. Books just smell right. We still buy a newspaper and the occasional magazine too.

I’m interested in one of these record players that can record vinyls on to memory sticks, which one have you got?

I cannot memorise stuff if it’s on a screen, so shopping lists and diaries are still paper.

I bought an almost brand new A5 Filofax a couple of years ago which is my diary… it’s heavy so it often stays at home. Gives me an excuse to say “I’ll have to check my diary when I get home “ which buys me time.

Im self employed so can get away with it!

But why? You haven't answered. Why is it supposedly better to you to watch a movie on a dvd instead of on netflix? It's lower quality, takes longer to set up, probably has unskippable ads. I cannot see why you do it.
