It’s a Halloween one!

AIBU to expect our downstairs neighbours to be home for Halloween if they have decked out the communal downstairs/outside with Halloween decor?

I thought how nice of them to get into the spirit of things and I got some sweets to put downstairs to be neighbourly. I have a young baby and really wasn’t expecting to be the door lady! I’m now here waiting for my partner to get home from work before I even attempt bed time for the kids.

Not in my neighbourhood. The convention is to have a normal light on by the front door if the children are welcome. Everyone around here knows this.

Might be better to say you’re not in the uk before telling us decorating and trick or treating aren’t links 🤣

My doorbell sounds like a foghorn and my baby is the worst sleeper. Thankfully mother nature answered my wishes and rained lol! Partner is home, baby is asleep (for now) and all is right in the world again. I’m just laying here thinking how bloody bizarre; decorate, make yourself unavailable and don’t even leave a haribo!

I decorate but I don't make myself available to trick-or-treaters. The two activities aren't linked in any way.

They are very much linked- the vast majority of people understand if the house is decorated then trick or treaters welcome, no decorations no knocking

Erm, to trick or treaters, they are intrinsically linked.

Erm, not in my neighbourhood. People are well aware that if the light isn't on they need not knock. Most of us have had decorations such as pumpkins, ghosts and witches up for three weeks. Totally unrelated to trick or treating.

Well, that's.....different 🤔

I don't think that's a universal custom.

In our neighbourhood the Halloween decorations signify that the homeowners are engaging with Halloween and trick or treaters are welcome.

We're usually mobbed here. This year we're tired and haven't put a pumpkin out. Doorbell has not rung once.

It’s definitely a thing! We’ve lived here for a few years and don’t decorate and our doorbell has never rang. This is this families 1st Halloween here and my doorbell rang at least 8 times!

Decorating and pumpkins definitely means ‘come to my house’ trick or treaters

I understand people decorate for Autumn (wreaths etc), but I know of nowhere that decorates for Halloween on any other day than... Halloween... (And then not expect Trick or Treaters?!) How bizarre.

Right. Sounds unusual, so where do you live then? Cause it’s not in the UK

Mama2many73 · 01/11/2025 00:21

We have a very anxious dog who gets distressed when people ring the bell. Luckily we can lock our tall gate to stop callers but we also put a sorry sign up.

If uou check on line there are loads of printable posters with things like 'please dont knock but please take a treat!.
Also in the UK and if a house is decorated then that s accepted fair game for T&T.
