Anyone experienced this? Covid and periods …

Sorry to post on here but looking for some reassurance.

I started with Covid symptoms last weekend and have been ill ever since. On top of this I started my period a week early which is very very unusual (as in, unheard of).

Thing is the period is so heavy if I didn’t know better I’d think I was haemorrhaging! I got up on day two, went to toilet and I swear it was like someone just tipped a jug of blood into the toilet. Same thing happened this morning and now today I’m having big clots, two have been so big they felt like tampons falling out. (I don’t wear tampons). Sorry to be so graphic - I promise I’m not a troll - I’m not looking for period stories or details - just a yes or no if need be - has anyone experienced covid effecting their period?

I do normally have heavy periods but this is ridiculous

I’ve had this. I think it’s a known side effect. Hope you feel better soon. It’s miserable.

PegDope · 31/10/2025 16:26

Omg the same thing happened to me - 8 days early which is unheard of for me. It was heavier than normal but not big clots.

Im on my period now, the first since and it’s still not right.

Colds, flu, Covid and lots of other illnesses can give us a hormone imbalance.

The heaviest period I've ever had was when I had chicken pox.

How old are you? Perimenopause a possibility?
My periods went like this at 38/39, heavier and closer together for two or three years until they started getting lighter and further apart before I started HRT. I think the heavier bleeding is caused by being oestrogen dominant.

My two daughters both aged early twenties had this when they got covid. It took four months for one dd period to come back to normal and six months for the other

It's very common for covid to affect periods unfortunately. Hope you feel better soon 💜

Yes, I recall that even the covid vaccine was mentioned as affecting people's menstrual cycles, as well as having the virus itself.
There were several threads on it at the time on here.

I noticed an unusual interruption myself, but it could have been explained away by perimenopause at my age.

TwinklyFawn · 31/10/2025 17:40

I haven't had covid but my period was affected when i had the vaccine. I mastarted in the middle of the night. I went to the bathroom and the floor was covered in blood. It was like i had stabbed someone. My period was also really heavy when i had chicken pox. Normally i can get to the bathroom to sort myself out without the floor getting covered in blood.

I haemorrhaged for two days after the Covid vaccine and it wasn’t a period as I had been on the mini pill for years and didn’t get periods. The following year I was diagnosed with uterine cancer, I blame the vaccine.

Go to the pharmacy and ask them for some OTC tranexamic acid, its a little pricey but will help a lot. If the dose is less than 500mg or like 250g maybe take 3-4 x 2/3 times each day. It massively reduces heavy bleeding, in the long-run since you said you have heavy periods go to your GP and ask for them to prescribe tranexamic acid as well. You could also ask about getting NSAIDs such as mephonemic acid or naproxen (anti-inflammatories to reduce pain and inflammation).

Also look into something like the mirena coil or mini-pill, to use the progesterone to thin the uterus lining, and there's less to shed, so you bleed quite lightly, after it takes a few months to settle, and sometimes don't have your period.

It's defintely worth looking into, and the mirena is localised so works better in the uterus but has less side effects in the rest of the body. For insertion have paracetamol, ibuprofen 1h before, lidocaine injection, numbing gel etc and it reduces the majority of the pain for most people.

I hope the rest of your period isn't too bad and you can recover soon.
