To ask what pushchair I should get? Am I asking for too much?!

First time mum, currently 20 weeks, looking to buy our travel system.

So, firstly, we have fairly small cars with fairly small boots (a Seat Ibiza), so this needs to be bared in mind- I need it to fit in the boot with the carrycot ect and IDEALLY leave space for other bits.

We live in the countryside and I would love to take baby for walks, fairly rough terrain/ woodland walks so needs to be pretty sturdy!

We drive a lot and also live in the countryside so I feel like i’m looking for 2 prams in one… a lightweight compact pushchair to go in the car or an all terrain pushchair. arghhh.

So far I love the nuna triv next and bugaboo fox 5, very different I know but I just can’t decide what we need. I have also recently found the mamas and papas vardo which sounds like it could be a good inbetween?!

Please please do give suggestions/ own experiences with these or other prams. I feel like i’m asking too much for a pram that suits both types of lifestyle but I’m hoping there may be something out there?!

Mountain buggy swift

Anditstartedagain · 30/10/2025 20:08

If you want all terrain you need a mountain buggy or just use a sling for those walks.

Shattereddreamsparkway · 30/10/2025 20:12

I live in countryside and my bugaboo 3 has lasted over 5 years with two children on multiple dog walks daily on all terrain so I imagine the bugaboo 5 is even better

QuaintGreenFawn · 30/10/2025 20:12

Another vote for mountain buggy. Or out n about. You can pick them up second hand if you also want a "town" pushchair, although we use ours for everything.
A sling is a good idea for the walks, especially if it's likely to be very muddy or bumpy or there's any styles or kissing gates.
Also don't bother with a "travel system". Get the pushchair(s) you want and get a decent car seat, the ones in bundles aren't always the best and you don't need to put the car seat on the wheels.

Gilgogirl · 30/10/2025 20:12

Try for lightest weight possible. I know too many new mothers who’ve bought extremely expensive ones and they were just too heavy to load and unload. They wound up getting a cheaper easier ones in the end. Weight is a big factor in deciding.

We loved our city mini GT for hilly walks off road, and it folds quite small. We had adaptors to add a lie flat carrycot, but then that is off is folds really well one handed and is quite light. We got ours second hand and after tow children it was sold o. again, still in good condition. We looked at the out about but the seat unit was notably smaller so wouldn't have lasted as long.

Uppababy cruz is another good option. Uppababy are very solid and good on rough terrain. We had the Vista but it's a bit bulky and needs a medium size car - the Cruz is a bit smaller and still good on uneven surfaces. It is also the only carrycot which is approved for overnight sleep (or at least it was when we bought it 10 years ago) which makes it more versatile. On bad teething nights we used it on the base to rock them to sleep in the knowledge they could safely sleep in it overnight once settled

FancyCatSlave · 30/10/2025 20:29

We live in the countryside and drive everywhere, we had the icandy peach all terrain which was excellent and we used it for a long time.
Carrycot had to go on the passenger seat though, I didn’t want it touching the muddy wheels in the boot!

I had a horse and it spent all it’s time in the stable or at the field. I wanted one I could push with one hand and carry a haynet or lead a horse with the other.

hungryKat · 30/10/2025 20:30

I have the bugaboo fox 5 and love it, it’s a tank of a pram, so solid, very easy to push over grass, uneven ground etc. however, it is BIG! We have an estate car and it’s fine can fit a couple of bags of shopping with it, but I can’t see it fitting with shopping in a hatchback - we store it in 2 parts & very easy to fold/ unfold one handed. We did buy the butterfly as a travel pram which is good but it’s not as comfortable to push (I’m tall) or for my toddler. We got it as sometimes we just don’t want the huge pram (it doesn’t fit down a train aisle) and a small and really light pram is very handy.

My sister has the nuna triv, she likes it, she lives in a city, it’s great for her but it’s not great on uneven ground, it folds really well, they live in a flat and easy to store etc. it’s not as easy to fold though, needs two hands.

Id maybe look at the dragonfly, whilst the fox 5 is great I think in hindsight I think the dragonfly would have been better for us. They are like bikes, fox 5 is a mountain bike, dragonfly is a hybrid and butterfly a road bike.

MumChp · 30/10/2025 20:55

We loved our Nuna for the youngst.

BertieBotts · 30/10/2025 21:00

Get one for the car and one for local walks, or one where the seat lies flat so you don't need the carrycot for town. You can't do what you want with one pushchair. You need big(gish) wheels for all terrain.

This channel is usually vv good - they probably have fairly recent buyers guides or general guides to types as well.

I 2nd this. Fab pushchair.

TheLette · 30/10/2025 21:07

Agree with the previous poster about travel systems - generally the car seats they include aren't the best. Better to get stuff separately and pick the best option for each item rather than get a set. Car seat safety groups on Facebook can recommend you safe newborn seats; don't go to Halfords or similar.

nursepink · 30/10/2025 21:16

thanks for all the advice it’s honestly soooo helpful for a clueless first time mum.

I’m now thinking I have two options.. buy a city style pram (triv ect) for car journeys and use a carrier for walks OR get a second hand all terrain pushchair for walks.

Has anyone had the bugaboo dragonfly? What is it like? How is it on grass? Even the ‘city’ pushchair would need to be able to take on grass/parks.

I have a cosatto giggle 3 which I love, I think 3 wheels is so much more agile and better for all terrain. But it is big, but does go smaller if needed (wheels come off etc) so does fit in a very small boot occasionally.

However, I wanted to comment to say definitely get a travel system where the cat seat clips onto the pram!
If you need to go in the car to pop to the shops, or post office etc it is fantastic. I find my baby sleeps in the car, and I didn't want to wake them to put them in the pram, so just clipping the car seat onto the frame was a lifesaver. The amount of times I nipped out to do small errands and the freedom I got was definitely worth it.
It also meant I could bring baby inside in the car seat whilst he slept and make a cup of tea before transferring him out and waking him up. That extra 5 minutes of peace can be a lifesaver. (To caveat, we all know you shouldn't leave baby in the car seat too long!)

YouCantProveIt · 30/10/2025 21:35

Mum of 3 with the same off road, small to store wishes.

Out and about Nipper. No need for bassinets but if you want buy on Vinted.

Pram shop person said Mums buy A,B and C. Then a few months later they come back for the Nipper.

Don’t buy two buggies. Too much storage/ management.

They grow fast - newborn inserts do great.

Should say this lies flat for newborn as well!

PPs arent saying not to put the car seat on the buggy for nipping to the shops or whatever. They are saying that often when you buy a "travel system", the included car seat can be not a great one. Instead if you shop around, you can usually get the buggy you want just on its own and then buy a better car seat separately and all together you'd just spend the same price as the "travel system". Pretty much all infant carriers fit on all buggies with the right adapters.

Obeseandashamed · 31/10/2025 07:49

The fox 5 would be too big but the new bugaboo would be perfect. I’ve always had bugaboos and they’ve never let me down.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/10/2025 08:06

Use a sling for walks!

littleturtledove · 31/10/2025 08:13

Ime most people seem to have one big pram and then either a second, lighter pram or just a pushchair for when baby is a bit older. Buy second hand and you can get two for less than the price of one new pram! We have a second hand Fox as our big one and would thoroughly recommend it. But there are times when you do want a smaller, more lightweight one. We spent £350 on two second hand Bugaboos in excellent condition and that included loads of accessories which you mostly have to pay separately for if you buy new.

nursepink · 01/11/2025 23:32

Ok so we’ve decided to get a lightweight pushchair ( but that can handle park walks and some terrain) and to use a carrier for more tricky terrain.

We have narrowed it down to the bugaboo dragonfly, the joolz hub 2 and the nuna triv. Which is the best??
