To ask if you would have a fibre broadband pole erected in your front garden?

Just had a bloke from Openreach at my door asking if we would have a fibre broadband pole in our front garden.
I thought the payment for it might be quite decent but it’s literally only £150 🤣

What will happen if nobody accepts having the pole in their garden? He reckons when the government decide to switch off whatever our broadband is at the moment and move solely to fibre, we will just be left permanently without internet?

Has anyone got one in their garden, has it really affected your resale value?

No way would I do that . Our fibre is underground why can’t they do that everywhere ?

DeanStockwelll · 30/10/2025 14:12

Nooo , @didntlikeanyofthesuggestions , just needs to move up a bit and make room for me 😂😂😂.

orangewasp · 30/10/2025 14:13

No, absolutely not. There's plenty of places to put poles without interfering with people's gardens.

Heckythump1 · 30/10/2025 14:15

Apparently they can’t put it out on the street because of the gas mains 🤷‍♀️ I mean I’m pretty certain I’m going to say no but just worried we will end up with no internet in the future!

Ahh cough cough, put sensible head on ,
I am surprised they are putting poles up for fiber , near me it's all under the pavement.
Granted it was a bit of a pain while they were digging up the pavement but it only took about 4 days for the whole street to be done.

DeanStockwelll · 30/10/2025 14:18

I would of thought they'd ask your neighbours if they would like a erection pole in their garden, someone will say yes .

I'd cross that bridge if and when you come to it. It would definitely devalue your house and spoin your garden

Jollyjoy · 30/10/2025 14:20

No way!!

Jollyjoy · 30/10/2025 14:20

As in I’d never say yes and I’d never buy a house with it.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 30/10/2025 14:25

I wouldn’t say yes to this. There will be somewhere in the street it can go - they’ll have to work around what’s already there surely.

There's SCANDAL in our village at the moment as a random company have erected dozens of poles onto several estates which previously had zero poles - there is nothing residents can do about the poles going into footpaths due to some historic telecoms law apparently. Everyone is horrified, nobody has yet subscribed to this company's fibre (I think they'd be lynched if they did), the local councillor has been involved (nothing they can do either).

They will put poles in if they want, be it in your garden and pay you £150 or in your footpath for free...

I’m amazed they can block footpaths re disabled people’s access etc

IlIlIl · 30/10/2025 14:50

Personally for me if i would go for it if it meant we had the option of fibre, I’m sick of my only decent option being starlink.

Tarkan · 30/10/2025 15:29

There’s one in our next door neighbour’s garden but it’s so close to the fence that anytime something needs to be done to it the men randomly walk into our garden for it. We never get any notice so it’s always a bit of a surprise when I walk into the kitchen and there are a whole load of men in hi-viz vests in our garden.

Our whole area had underground fibre cables installed a couple of years ago so when we recently upgraded to high speed broadband we were quite surprised that it came from the pole out the back and not through the underground ones, I guess it’s different companies but we’d assumed it would all be the underground ones for everyone now.

Newbutoldfather · 30/10/2025 15:40

I would do it in exchange for free broadband at the highest speed available in perpetuity.

That would be worth a decent sum of money and cost them nothing. Might as well ask?
