Sinus/chest infection imminent

TEARELBO · 29/10/2025 22:36

I can feel a sinus/chest/upper respiratory infection on the way, this will be the 4th so far this year.
I've been through 6 rounds of antibiotics with the previous round ups.
Does anyone have any cures/suggestions to head this off before it progresses.

I can't bear the thought of it again, so soon after the last dose.

I find a hot water bottle high up on the chest can help stave them off sometimes. Worth a try.

Zinc, echinacea, vitamins C and D. These have really helped me to ward off imminent infections. That, and going to bed and staying in the warm, until I feel better. Take care.

Allicin pills. Can you order some or get someone to collect? Not guaranteed but I escaped a lurgy everyone had at my then office by using those.

Try some fisherman's friend, they have done the trick for me a few times when I felt a chest infection coming on!

I had 9 sets in one year. I feel your pain

also oregano oil capsules. Tbh i take both if i have something coming on. It's usually an issue for me, I can't seem to catch a cold without ot being a chest infection or sinus infection - mum is the same.

It’s awful and so debilitating- that’s an awful amount of doses
and people think we’ve only got a head cold and just power on
every part of me will ache and my throats starts closing up and I can’t breathe when I’m the thick of it
but strangely I’ve not had Covid yet - may the powers that decide have decided I have enough misery

i had this problem in my early 30s - I was otherwise fit and healthy but I just kept getting these horrible sinus infections again and again. I still get them from time to time - you have a cold; everyone thinks you recovered but you feel so poorly all the time and it’s exhausting.

PS if it gets bad my personal opinion is the antibiotics do not really solve the things - I try to avoid them.

I would:

  • go on a gut-health mission to fix the damage of the antibiotics. Lots of fermented food and kefir
  • drink hot broth as a first course for all meals, and drink green tea throughout the day (breathe in the steam!)
  • steam inhalation/hot steamy shower every morning but NOT just before you go out in the cold
  • raised pillows in bed to allow drainage from your head

I also second Fisherman’s Friends - disgusting but effective

And avoid too much dairy - have you considered possibly you have developed a food intolerance?

How are you managing to get antibiotics from your GP? Everyone I know is refused them and you have to practically be at death's door before the doctor will prescribe.

Short term, Neil Med Sinus rinse and a steroid spray will help the symptoms. Long term, ask for a referral to ENT. I ended up hospitalised with a bad sinus infection one time, and thereafter requested a referral. They found my sinuses were structurally quite narrow and bendy, so I had a small surgical procedure to open them up. Recovery was uncomplicated, and from that day (20+ years ago) I have been free of sinus trouble. Full stop. I wish you luck sorting this out, and send you commiserations for the current troubles.
Kind regards, a fellow sufferer
